Need Help - Failed Bank 2 Pre Cat 02 Sensor

Okay, so 'Service Engine Soon' light came on while driving yesterday. Took the M into Russell BMW this morning. They said it was the 'Bank 2 Pre Cat 02 Sensor' that failed. Oh, and they said a whole bunch of other crap (tires, mount, balance, blah, blah..stick it in my pooper...) estimated at $2,266.44. I laughed and picked up the car and paid $87 for the damn diagnostic test.

So, anyone help me out with a better place to buy a new 02 Sensor? Dealer charges $132hr, and estimated 2 1/2 hr job...WTF...really. Anyways, thoughts?

Well, I don't see a PN for the sensors when I use the website to search. Searched 2009 M3 [E90]. Saw a front and rear sensor; Items 6 & 7 in the diagram that shows up. Will call BMW on Monday to get a part number. The MSRP price on the website looks about right with what the dealer quoted.

Actually, I bought an M3 under warranty...and now it's out of warranty... man. And for what I expect [or hope]..is that someone would say, you can buy genuine OEM parts here, for much cheaper. Kinda like the first responder.

Not sure where you live but get an estimate from an independent shop in the area (search this forum for recommendations). Labor hours are always cheaper and usually on a job that big, the $ difference for parts are minimal.

This may be a DIY moment. Why not identify the part? If it matches the sensor you found online, you could attempt to reach the part under the car. Can you ask Russell to show you the issue while the car is on the lift?

I'm new to BMW where everything is more complicated but on a lesser car an O2 sensor just screws into a bung in the exhaust. I would absolutely look into DIY, if the sensor is easily accessible and not frozen in place it should be an easy remove and replace.

Try getting an estimate at At Speed in Hanover, MD or Autowerks in Fallston, MD for labor. These guys are reputable in the area and BMW Specialists.

2 and a half hours? OMG.

Unbolt the cover plate under the front 1/3 of the car and look before the cats, just behind the headers. There they are, waiting to be unplugged, unscrewed, and replaced.

Should take an hour, because you don't have a lift and it's a PITA to get the cover on and off working on jackstands.

This is like the dealer book time for brake pads, which is over two hours. What is the mechanic going to be doing for two hours? It's a 45-min. job even if you suck at it.

anyways, trying to help you save a bit here:

Now that you have the OEM part numbers handy, go to bmw FFX online parts order (or tischer since you're in MD) and and buy your parts for cheap (it always helps to do a comparison shop as Checkmate provided you another price earlier):

I also recommend negotiating a fixed price for labor at a independent shop. I can only refer my local NoVA shop J&F Motors in Arlington, VA. (they also provide a shuttle to metro, if needed)

As others have said, if you have a lift, it sounds like a 1 hour job, if shops and dealers are quoting you 2 hours, I would try to negotiate for a fixed price like 1.25 hour or 1.5 hours and rationalize with them. Make sure J&F can also clear the CEL for you too.
