Thank the Gov't for printing money, inflation + time will eventually raise the price of true classics, make them more expensive than ever, like the E30 M3 and soon the E46 M3 for sure.

It's just a matter of time and if you are willing to wait.
what are the numbers?

a good 1987-1991 M3, especially Evo, with no engine swap, just very clean and all original, in the $30k to 40K... for today standards it had a low US production numbers, since just about 5,800 made it to the US. it's price went up about 27% in the last two years, and it is expected to go up 25% in one year. Numbers from "Sports Car Market." It's a good investment car, if you can find one, very very difficult.

What do you miss specifically about the E46 M3?

If the new m3/m4 turbo experiment goes wrong, then the e9x might not depreciate as much, then of course the rarer the better.

Not comparable to E9x M3.

- E30 was THE first M3. First versions of anything will appreciate in time
- E30 M3's (especially EVO or convertible) are infinitely rarer than E9x

Even the E46 M3 (while a great car) isn't a collectible car. They can be had in the teens, and the garage queens with no miles are in the 30s? That's still less than what they were new.

If you really want something that MIGHT appreciate in value in god knows how many years, buy a 1M. That's got all the traits of being a collector car.

It's not going to retain its value so just drive it and enjoy it. Not having fun with your M and babying it to make it more desirable to its next owner is like not having "fun" with your wife/GF to make them more desirable for their next lover.

Perhaps.

Again, why worry about a dollar value when the car you love brings so much more than money. It's just a waiste of time thinking about it now.

It also wont retain value because there will be less and less "enthusiasts" in the future who will appreciate what ///M cars used to be about. Soon there will probably be an ///M model for just about every series and make in the BMW lineup and it will cease to be something special with the brand being watered down so much. Welcome to the turdbro and high horsepower era.

Limited run cars like the E92 Lime Rock, E36 M3 Lightweight, etc. are probably the most likely candidates to start gaining in value. Run of the mill unmolested E92 M3s not so much, although the well kept ones will definitely always be a bit special -- the way things are going, it's not likely we'll see another V8 M3.

How long do you have to wait? I'd guess at least 30-40 years for that "investment" to pay off.

Here's how it'll go down...

You'll log into M3Post.com 30 years from now with a question about why your M4's electric motor is so noisy on a cold start and you want to know if BPM Sport can lower your hover height on your flying BMW and whether you can get a group buy on a remote tune to do that. Some dude will post a eBay link to an E92 M3 Lime Rock with 100 original miles on it. You geriatrics will collectively wet your pants, and wax poetic about how it was the only M3 with a V8, and how it was really awesome when cars had tires. You'll all watch as the bids go up on this car. But, that car will miss reserve, get reposted a dozen times but never sell.

20 more years pass, and you're watching class car auction in your holodeck in the old age home. The Lime Rock M3 appears on the 3D screen. It's the same one... 100 original miles on it. This time, it's for real. It finally sells... for 800K. The owner laughs all the way to the bank in his flying car. Increased the value of his investment over 10X he says to his son.

5 years later, on his death bed, he pulls his son close to him, and his last dying words will be "I wish I had driven that damn car".

I think you are right about the E30 being very rare... I was not comparing M3's.
I think the E9x M3 is fairly rare, being the only V8 M3 made, not more or less exclusive than an E46.... but all these cars given time will increase in value, not only because they are M3's but because technology is changing, and the way cars are going to be perceived is changing. Regardless, I have an M3 not because of wether or not becomes a collectors car. I'll keep mine, and enjoy the hell out of it, driving the beautiful country roads of NC & TN

Retain yes. Gain no. If you are worried about resale value I would say consider swapping out of your car every 2 years. In that case, you may be better off leasing. A possible gain would be had decades from now.

?

I hope you're not buying new in this scenario. The best way to get value from a car is to buy it used, maintain it well, and keep driving it until with wheels fall off.

The best way to get value is probably not buying an expensive gas guzzling BMW sports car with expensive parts and labor and higher insurance costs. We should all be driving nice affordable Camrys. At this point we have clearly opted out of that equation.
