M button
Is there a specific reason to drive with the m button turned off? Is it for a smoother ride, better gas mileage, does it preserve the engine not running in the high rpm's? Just curious. I prefer the tighter, sportier ride.

Drive the car how ever your want to. I have my M button with all the max setting ie: sports plus, mdm but dont use it all the time so that when I do use it Iam not desensitized to it.

It changes the throttle response for the M3. Quick throttle response is not as comfortable for daily driving, especially for passengers.
On the M6 the M button adds 100 hp. |

It doesn't change the throttle response if you don't set it up to change the throttle response. It also doesn't change the ride if you don't have it set up to change the ride.

I leave it off when I first start her up in the morning. I have mine set to max everything except only s6 for the tranny. I find that when she's cold in the morning, she's too jerky for my taste. Once she's warmed up a bit though, the m is on.

M(e) mode is for you (stiffer suspensiion, sharpened throttle response, heavier steering, less traction control) when you have passengers (i.e wife, kids, bosses, etc.) you have to turn off M(e) mode and go to "others" mode which I like to call normal mode.
Simple as that, now go out and drive. Also remember to cut people off and speed recklessly, you're in an M3 afterall. |

I only consider pushing the M button when I know how close the next gas station is.
But seriously, I treat the M button like the "Emergency Exits" signs at work. It really depends on the driving situation. If some young kid pull up at the stop sign with some kind of souped up civic I leave it off. It's really not worth opening up the can of "Whip Ass". Now if my friend pulls up at the stop sign with his Porsche 911 or Corvette, I'm going to be pushing every dam button in my M3 and talking trash along the way. Then we go and have a beer to laugh about it. Seriously, enjoy your M3 while it lasts. Don't F it up for some bragging rights at the expense of damaging or destroying your car. |

In a nutshell (consistent with what the owner's manual says) the M button is simply a way to simultaneously implement several key settings in an instant without having to separtely adjust each one individually (in other words, it is simply a way to reduce the amount of time needed to "call up" a preferred combination of settings). How firm of a ride, how fast or slow throttle response, etc. is purely happenstance as to how each individual driver configures his/her particular vehicle.
So...... Do you "use" the M button to get A firmer suspension setting? Sure - if you have the M button set up with that setting. But conversely - someone may use M button for a quicker throttle response, but still want "comfort" as setting for EDC. So again - the answer to whether the M button is specifically used for a given setting or response is totally variable depending upon each particular driver's subjective preferences. The M button does not categorically do anything specific aside from simply calling up several settings simultaneously. |

I have my M settings for pure performance, so using it all the time is kind of pointless.
Even when i put it into D with more comfortable setting on, its still a pretty sporty ride. |

How about the MDM set up on M power mode? Is this has a better throttle compare with EDC power on at all time?

I find the car to be more predictable to drift with the M button on (Throttle is set to sport +). With the M button off it's kind of hard to know exactly when it will kick out the rear end

Ive never driven with mine off. Primarly because the only way to get the heavier steering, atleast with Idrive is to do it via the M button setting. I did not want EDC so that does not change. I like the max throttle response which again is only accessible via pushing the M button in the settings. Sport button on the console only gets you to the 2nd setting and can't get you most aggressive throttle.
Shifts I always want in S5 so that is a no brainer. I keep full traction on in streets |
