As my M3 reaches 10K miles it lights up the dash

My car was about to turn 10K miles today, so out of fun I kept
my eyes on the clock to witness this milestone... and as soon as
it read 010000 the infamous "Check Engine Soon" light came on

- It says emissions etc... called the dealership and taking it in tomorrow..
What a bummer... my car had been running flawlessly till today...

Hoping for the best.... let's see what happens...

For my car, early in the miles, all my lights came on like that for the scheduled idle control valve failure...lol

Why not pull the codes before taking it to the dealer?

Odie, sorry to hear your story man. Like you, I keep my eyes on the odometer for certain milestones. Hopefully it will be nothing.

Question: had you just filled up with gas before the warning light came up?

I had something similar with my X5 one time - check engine light. Took to the dealer and my SA checked and said it was emissions related, not an engine issue. Not all the time, but until today, when I fill up the X5 tank, sometimes the check engine light pops up for a day or two, then it goes away. Since SA said not to worry (emissions only) and the car is a lease under warranty, I never worry too much. I brought it two times to dealer re this, in two different occasions, but the light had come off and nothing shows up in the codes.

But I have to say I would treat my M differently than my X5.

Thanks everybody for the replies and great input.

This is not a regular maintenance call. The engine symbol is on
and the message is a triangle with a exclamation mark in it saying
"Increased Emissions". (Hope nothing to do with the engine itself)

I dont have ways to pull de code unless I take it to the SA.
I had only a quarter tank of gas left when this happened, so I doubt that
it can be caused by the tank cap... but you never know...

They say it would take about 40 mins for them to find the cause and
then keeping the car if needed.

It was kind of freaky to have this thing happen as if it was programmed to
trigger a warning at specific mileage...

About to leave for the dealer and I will keep you posted.

Back from the dealership.

After waiting for a while my SA came out with a code/diagnosis:
"Sporadic Faulty 02 sensor"... nothing else. They reset it and told me
that if it comes back on they would replace the sensor but at this point
it seems like it was a isolated error (Really hope so)

Made it home ok. No lights so far and I hope I don't get to see it again...

Fingers crossed. Just a little paranoid and I am avoiding to
look at the computer display altogether

This is actually pretty common for these cars. You need to do yourself a favor, go to any Pep Boys or something similar and pickup an inexpensive scantool. A decent one can be had for around $90.00.

I have this one...it can read CAN BUS as well as OBDII and it shows readiness condition as well as able to clear codes.

Hey Matt..look familiar..

Odie, glad to hear all is fine. Now keep your eyes in the road and avoid the instrument cluster altogether. Are you trying telekinesis next?

Sorry but I don't get it.... what if I pull a code? Do I reset it whenever I feel
like it's not serious? I don't see the point... (I confess that I am not a
mechanically inclined person)

Took her out for a drive this morning and it's hard not to feel like
life is great right now...

Yes, I ended up getting the M Perf exhaust. But I did it at the dealership as opposed to port. I figured I would keep the stock exhaust just in case. Like you said, it is awesome, no regrets.

Here is the link to my pics:
