Should my 2007 M3 be burning Oil??
I have owned my 2007 M3 now for 10 months and done 3000 miles, i had to put a litre of oil in 6 months ago and its needing another litre now, i called BMW and they told me its perfectly acceptable for the car to require a litre of Oil every 620 miles is this correct???
I have allways owned BMW cars and never had this before, its not a leak as theres nothing on my driveway. |

Yeah if its really going through a quart every 600 miles that's not right. I've got 30k miles on my car and I've probably put a quart in every 6000 miles or so.
But reading your post again, I guess you've only put one quart in, right? Do you know when the last owner had last put in a quart? Maybe it was many miles before he sold it? Edit: Ok so you had to put in a quart sometime in the 3000 miles you've had it, and now it needs another. Got it. Yeah, although you don't say exactly how many miles since the last quart, I'll assume around 1500, and that's too soon to be normal IMHO. Though as long as the car runs fine otherwise, I guess its ok. How many miles on the car? Oh, and in case someone tries to correct the OP about his "2007 M3", remember, in Europe (which I assume Warrington is - sound like UK) these cars were on sale in 2007. Although in the US we'd still have technically called them MY2008 since they were September 2007 production as I recall it. Last edited by mkoesel; 09-17-2010 at 07:33 AM.. |

Yeah, short of some obvious signs or codes or something, I don't think they are going to do much for you. I guess you could have a private shop run a compression check for peace of mind.

Manufacturers set the limit of oil consumption at 1-qt every 1K miles, before they consider it a problem. That's A LOT of oil. And you're well within that threshold, so I'd demand for them to take a look at the engine, especially if you don't track the car (sounds like you didn't). Maybe that's why the previous owner got rid of it . Completely unacceptable IMO. Good luck.

I have had many bimmers and never had to add so much oil so soon. That is definatly not normal. Did the previous owner follow brake in procedure? We will never know , but my guess is he did not. Maybe thats why he got rid of it? As previous poster suggested i would ask bmw to check the engine and if you are not satisfied with their decision, getting rid of the car may not be a bad idea before your warranty runs out.
