Warning for DCT: Do not install latest BMW software update

If you haven't read, the latest BMW software update will prevent you from engaging your transmission without your seatbelt buckled, either D or R.

While I always wear mine on the road, this is a huge PITA, especially when backing up in your driveway, tight parking, etc.

I'm all for safety, but this is stupid. So if something with my seat belt mech fails, I cant drive my car?!

That sucks. Thanks for the heads-up

This was posted a while back. You can just get the seat belt buckle simulator and snap that in if you don't want the belt on for some reason.

That's interesting.. I'm curious how they enforce this on the 6MT cars and also if coding can remove the restriction.

Interesting.... I've read this before but this is not the case with my M3 MFD 09/11. I wonder what other benefits the new update provides.

I too have the latest DCT and DME update and I don't have this problem. Perhaps Canadian spec cars are exempt from this "feature".

Seems this is already being attended to in ISTA/P 2.45, stemming from a "calibration error":

Subject: After programming the vehicle with ISTA/P 2.43.x and 2.44.x the DCT transmission will not go into gear unless the driver's seat belt buckle is latched and an erroneous fault
Situation : After programming the vehicle with ISTA/P 2.43.x and 2.44.x the DCT transmission will not go into gear unless the driver’s seat belt buckle is latched and an erroneous fault - CF26 is stored in the DCT module.
Vehicles affected: E89 (Z4), E90, E92, and E93 M3 with DCT, produced up to 9/2009
Cause: Calibration error to be corrected with ISTA/P 2.45.0 (E89X-11-09-506)

Recommendation: In the event that the vehicle is programmed, please advise the customer of the functionality change that requires the seat belt to be buckled in order to select a drive gear.

Technical Service

Hope this helps.

I still don't get this. I can 'D' and 'R' without having my seat belt on but if I open my door to check around the side while reversing there's a 50/50 chance it'll go into 'N'. Now that's a PITA.

I wonder if vehicles manufactured after 9/2009 are unaffected.
