Best Sound quality using 6FL option?

Which is best?
Using a USB flash memory stick or IPOD?

Heard that using the IPOD will induce another DtoA conversion where as the USB flash memory will only have one DtoA conversion in the chain,

I thought that only using the headphone out socket on the IPOD will induce this extra conversion as where using the IPOD connector at the base will not???

I have noticed a difference from using and ipod to a USB drive. The USB sounds better. All the EQ settings on the iPod were turned off but there was still a difference.

The Ipod audio from the 6FL is horrible. Almost bandpassed or AM sounding compared to a flash drive.

An alternative to the flash drive is formatting the ipod on a PC and using it like a drive connected to the car with a standard ipod cable.

Also, the compression you are using to get your music onto the ipod matters. The default settings on itunes SUCK, but the better compression algorithms are much, much better.

Good Luck!

I don't use iTunes for encoding, just for loading to the iPod. I encode with EAC + LAME and there is still a noticeable difference between the ipod and flash drive.

i also noticed this
using a standard ipod cable
much better sound
faster switching between songs
so less of a silence in between songs when you click forward

I took about 15 mins to pull in all my 42gig of music. Once it had all the songs, it has been working great. Much better then my ex's 328 6fl.

Now, my question is will the car recognize play lists?

There is an app for the mac that can export itunes playlists to m3u, but I fear the directory structure would be off and it would not work. I might give it a go tomorrow and see what happens.

Thanks guys! I bought an 8GB flash drive and replaced the iPod nano with it! It sounds great and now more room!

Do the cars without the iPod integration come with the USB and AUX where the armrest compartment is?

I formatted my Ipod (exFAT option, not NTFS, hope this is correct),
If I wanted to play my songs on the IPod just through the headphones as normal, is there a program that can be installed on the Ipod to enable playback of the songs?

Just now, the normal apple software on the Ipod isnt recognising the songs because of the formatting done.

My car came new with a 6inch USB extension lead so you can tuck your memory stick round the side of the armrest compartment.

are you saying your 6" is better than my 1"??

i got that too
but it makes the arm rest compartment messy
the plug just bends and only covers the cig lighter outlet

Got the IPOD to work as a USB Memory Stick:
  1. Use Itunes to restore IPOD and dont sync any music on it.(FAT32 is used)
  2. Enable disk mode
  3. Transfer music to the IPOD using Windows Explorer
  4. Use standard Apple IPOD/USB lead to connect to car
