Bearing Failure....

2011 M3 DCT:

Have had numerous engine stalls as in completely shuts off...but starts right back up! This has happen 4X and they cant find anything.

Also have the dreaded ticking/knocking syndrome. First visit to the dealership they did verify the noise. PUMA case started and engineer response was to re-tourque the bedplate bolts. This was done on the second visit. When I went to check on the status of my car, the technician was just returning from a test drive. He tells me that the ticking/knocking is gone. I wasnt so optimistic, so he says lets go on a test drive. We go on a test drive and I take the car behind a local grocery store where it is somewhat quite and a fence line to where we could easily here any noise. It took about eight passes at slow speed but it finally did it and the technician did once again confirm the noise.

Technician elevates the PUMA case again and the engineers come back with: Wait for it....CHANGE THE CRANK SHAFT and BEARINGS!!! This of course has generated a third visit at which point the car is at the dealership now. The new Crankshaft and associated bearings arrived last week. As a side note: The second engineering response took less than 24hrs to receive. I have a feeling that the engineers understand that "SOME" S65 engines have substandard bearings!! My car has 10,831 miles clocked so far.

I will keep everyone posted.

OP: Can you describe the ticking/knocking noise in more detail?

I had a similar sound with my car, BMW NA personally investigated and determined it was a low oil level (the Dealership had just performed 1st oil service and it was low). I don't have any answers, I'm just very interested to know more about it and whether it goes away with your new crankshaft and bearings. Subscribed.

1. At what mileage did you first hear it?
2. Is the sound audible on both sides of the engine or only at a certain rpm?
3. Did they mention if they had other cases?

Thank you and I'm sorry to hear of your troubles!

I've got the same sound, took it to BMW they hear it then the tech later said he could not repeat it. I hear it daily now, could it be doing anything else harmful to the engine right now?

Damn sorry to hear that. Hope you get it all sorted out.

Can someone explain to me what this knocking/ticking noise is? Where and at what point in my drive would I hear it (assuming something is wrong)?

Most companies wouldn't even warranty this stuff, if you have to go behind a quiet grocery store to hear a noise like that then other brands will label you as nitpicking and deny the claim. BMW will spend thoudsands rebuilding your engine to make you happy though, even though the noise is probably within specifications.

Here's the kind of service you'd get from a typical brand:

http://www.pistonslap.com/

Anyways your bearings didn't fail and the part isn't deffective, it's probably just a part that's within spec that's causing excessive noise.

BMW replaced the crank and bearings in my 07 e90 M3, and the knocking noise remained. In the end, Germany sent down a brand new 2011 engine which I'm just about finished running in. The noise is gone now.

Love the link man.

I think you're spot-on with the nitpicking thing. Good post

I'm sorry to jump in on your thread, but I also have a ticking noise near the left and right firewalls when it is running. I purchased the car with 16,000 miles back in october and now have 18,000 miles on it. The ticking has been there since I purchased it and I just assumed it was normal. I thougth it might be an emission control vavle ticking at idle like on my previous cars. Can someone please chime in if the tick tick tick tick sound I hear is normal. You are talking about a steady tick tick tick sound at idle right and not a random clicking like in this video? See below.

I really hope this is not against rules posting another users youtube link. I appologize if it is, but wanted to help out the OP.

We are talking about the random ticking sound you hear in the video. The steady one is just the valves i believe.

Finally, a common sense response. Wish people understood the difficulty in mass producing parts to exact spec with absolutely NO FAULTS. You want a hand built, hand inspected car, its going to cost a bit more than 70k.

Cars are machines, made of many parts from many manufacturers, and sometimes somewhere along the line, they fail. Every part can't be tested by BMW for 100 of hours prior to being placed i your car, for no other reason then they will then be used parts with less life on them......that is life, that is reality.

To the OP: sorry for your frustrations, but take this time to enjoy your slow loaner so that when you hop back into the ///M it will feel even faster

Cheers,
e46e92

That is some damn good service. To have an engine running to spec, except for a noise, and have them replace it? Yes, that is the right thing to do so as to avoid a possible catastrophic failure, but many manufacturers would not have done that.

It has been good service in the end. The car has been with them for 3 months while they have been trying to get to the bottom of it - so I have been driving around in a M3 DCT for most of that time. Glad I didn't get the DCT!! Can anyone say "boooring!!!" Anyway, I had to say that!!

In my opinion, replacing a crankshaft and main bearings without pulling the engine and verifying that the main bearing bores are in proper alignment and are in spec for both roundness and taper is a waste of time.

Bearings almost always fail due to another issue which leads to the failure, very seldom is the bearing itself the problem.

Unless you're talking about an //M engine.

I saw the bearings out of my old engine, there were buggered. The engine had done 30,000 kms. It was a July 2007 build, so it did have the bad bearings and crank that they changed from Nov2008 onward.

I don't understand how some people can take their car into the dealership to complain about a rattle somewhere and then complain about the car being in the shop. I know one guy who took his car into the shop because he kept hearing a ticking noise and it turned out to be a stuck pebble in his tire.
While I couldn't hear much on some of those vids either, I take the oppsite opinion of you. I saw the vids of the S54's with a HOLE IN THE BLOCK from bad bearings!!!

Also check out oil analysis: http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=511940

Maybe you go through cars every 2-4 years, in which case you don't care. Some of us would like our cars to last a few years.

Now we find out a care built after 10/2008 has bad bearings too??? Wasn't the new bearing part numbers suppose to fix this issue?

And peopl complain about the car being in the shop because most are still making payments on the car but they are not driving the car because the manufacturer messed up. Is that unreasonable???

lets not jump to conclusions, S65 has very very small amount of crank bearing failures
