How can you identify an oem BMW ps2 from a regular ps2? Is it the speed rating? 87vs. 93y?

I think a good set up would be to get some lightweight 18: wheels and RE-11 tires on them

I am about to replace my tires, but I have some difficulties finding the PS2 for rears with the indicative (98Y)....I can find only with (94Y) for the rears.

How important is to go with the (94Y) rather than the (98Y) ??

On the other hand I found the ContiSportContact3 with the (98Y) for the rear...is it better to go with Conti (98Y) rather than PS2 (94Y) ?

Just got my second set and went with PS-2's. Had P-Zeros on my E46 and they were great as well. Can't go wrong with either one of these IMO. Haven't tried the RE-11's. Maybe I'll give them a shot the next time around.

Ive had 2 sets of PS2s in 19 and have the OEM PS2s on my OEM 18 incher track wheels. They were ok but not so good in the wet.

So I took delivery of some 255 and 275 VREDESTEIN Ultrac Sessantas today off the back of the thread in here about them. Will report back when Ive got them on. Ill try and post reviews every few thousand miles.

Wont be till next week though, busy tomorrow and need to tax the damned thing too. John Cooper Works for a few days!

On 18", the service description will be 93Y Front and 97Y rear. On the 19" it will be 93Y front and 98Y rear. That still does not completely narrow it down, you have to ask for the BMW OEM tires, which will have a little star on the sidewall. If you do not get the BMW version, it is not the end of the world, all of them are good, but the "star" tires are preferred as they have been tweaked to whatever specs BMW requested.

When you go outside of the stock sizes, obviously BMW OE tires are not generally available.

Little OT, but...
Ben, would you happen to know if AD08s, or the RE-11s will be offered in more sizes in the future?

Nothing on the immediate horizon, but I would not say that it is out of the question. The trackable street tire category has been popular lately, so I would not be surprised to see the size lineups expand.

So Ben, if we order on the Tire Rack website and put in our BMW M3 vehicle and the PS2s come up on the screen, are they automatically the 'star' BMW-spec'd tires, or do we need to call you to ensure we are getting the BMW OEM PS2 tire?

If you put in the M3, and tell it to show you the OE tires, it will show the BMW version. If you go to "view all tires" it will show the BMW version, and the others too. The ones that are OEM on a particular car will have a little note "BMW" or whatever the other car might be.

Hey Ben, when I put the OE 19" PS2s in my cart and go to check out, it pops up a "tire load warning", saying that the tires in my cart have a higher load rating than OE, but the product description has them at 93Y front, 98Y rear, like you say (which is also what's on the sidewall of my original tires). Just a site error? Also, do have any ETA on when you'll have the fronts back in stock?

I'm also wondering about this... I've had a couple on back order going on a month now.

Ben: Are the weights correct that the RE-11 in this size range is a full 4 lb heavier than the PS2? That is over 15% which seems really like a lot.
Does seem like a lot (weight). Well, I'm now in the market for new rears (after 13k mi). I have to decide b/w the OEM PS2 vs RE-11.

Thing is, it's hard to pick the dry/wet mix here in Sth Central TX. We can have weeks of dry then it can rain like mad & aquaplaning becomes a serious risk on my commute (has happened once and nearly lost it).

Also, the price issue has narrowed a fair bit (maybe because of imminent release of PS3?)

265/35 ZR19 PS2 = $359
RE-11 = $308

so $100 for 2 diff for PS2. Not that big a deal now.

Maybe I just stay w/ PS2's because my fronts are good for a few more k's?

Completely agree. So PS2 then? (vs RE-11)

Hi Ben
I'm in the market for some track tires. Ideally I would like to get some track wheels/r comp tires- either psc or a048s. But how much more dry grip will those rcomps offer over a re11 or ad08? If it's not much, I might just consider getting those tires.

Thanks

If I had the time and the money I would try the RE-11s and see what they were like...but as I don't, I tend to stick with the PS2s as I know what I am getting...I like a "pointy" car (but with a progressive breakaway at the rear), and with a few extra psi in the fronts (the backs at std) the car on PS2s handles just how I like it.
Other brands may well be better but on the other hand they not be, or at least they may not suit the way I like the car to behave. If the PS2s were not available I think I would be tempted by the Continental CSC3 which by some accounts give less overall grip but far more "feel" and confidence at the limit.
Sorry that this is not likely to be much help to you in making your decision.

No, it is. I think I am content to stay w/ PS2s - though if PS3's were available NOW I would opt for those as it appears they offer better wet grip.

With Sth Texas getting rain associated w/ Hurricane Alex I am reminded again why I won't just opt for dry grip - I am sitting on 70-80 going home and need decent dispersal of water by the tires.

I had also heard that about the CSC3. Isn't this the tire that BMW M chose for the GTS? I think so.

I think the GTS uses Pirelli Corsa's.
Those are at a different level, slightly higher than RE-11, comparable to the original Pilot Sport Cups, not the BMW spec cups.
I think I've said it before but you can't compare RE-11 to PS2s. Completely different tires for completely different purpose.
PS2s can't handle track work, they heat up too quick and gets destroyed too quick as well, the RE-11s hold up very well and so do the Cups.
Don't know much about the Pirelli Corsa's but alot of higher end cars use them, like Lamborghini and Ferrari Scuderias.

How do AD08 compare to RE11?

Also, any idea what their weight is vs the RE11 and PS2s?

AD08 and RE-11 are really, really similar. Yoko has a small edge in grip on a dry surface, which is offset to some degree by the RE-11 being a little more communicative and progressive in breakaway at the limit.

Both tires are excellent, and I would recommend either to someone who wants maximum dry grip, roadworthy but not amazing wet grip, and capability for autocross or light track duty.

Just found out that the RE11s are not imported to Europe for some strange regulation / legal reason?!!

WTF? Is this true or is it some kind of BS I was fed over the phone? I called a UK based internet tyres retailer who was pretty confident / firm in his statements. These tyres were never imported to Greece either, which is in line with the UK story...

I don't get it...
