Has anyone tried the new 255/35/19 Pilot Super Sport * tyres?
Has anyone fitted a set of the new construction Michelin Pilot Super Sport 255/35/19 BMW OEM * tyres....the ones homologated for the front of the new M3/4? (275/35/19 for the rears).
If the new design tyres are partly responsible for the reported impressive front end grip of the new M3/4 then they may well give some improvement for the E9x M3 as well. |

I have 255/35/19 PSS on my car but I'm unaware of them being a special bmw spec. Nevertheless my opinion is that front grip has been greatly improved over the stock OEM 245/35 PS2.

This from Chris Harris:
"We had 19-inch wheels (standard in the UK) running the standard Michelin Pilot Super Sports. Incidentally, that's a completely new tyre with a bespoke aramid belting and compounds specific to this car only. Front axle grip is alarming at first - you push, it grips, you play silly, and it still grips. On very technical roads, nothing in the class would see where it had gone (in the dry) for that reason alone." Looks really interesting...I'm inclined to take off my current 245/35/19 PSS tyres (still with plenty of life) and try a set of these new spec tyres. |

We do have a part # for the BMW OEM version 255/35R19 PSS with the star branding. None in stock yet, and they have not given us detailed specs.
As always with an OE-spec tire, I expect BMW to tout it as vastly better than the 'normal' version without disclosing anything specific that makes it unique.

I had an email exchange with their tech support which didn't really have what I was looking for and they suggested I should to call them for further info.
So i'll call them Monday and see what they say. |

I talked to Michelin today and they couldn't really help in that they haven't run an E9x M3 with these tyres and they have no way of knowing if the changes they made to the star rated OEM tyres for the new M3/4 would benefit the E9x M3 or not.
I guess someone will have to try them and see. |

The 255 / 275 combo would fit better on the 359M wheels. Most car makers run 255 on 9 inch front wheels and 275 or 285 on 10 inch rears. Somewhere I have the details of a Michelin tech guy from Goodwood FOS last year. I'll have a look for them. |

The person I spoke to was a bit reluctant to give (or didn't know of any) details of the BMW * rated PSS tyres except that Michelin had constructed the tyres to a particular BMW specification with a different carcass and tyre compounds If the 255/35/19 size had a stiffer sidewall (than the current 245/35/19 PSS) that would be interesting - something with a faster response to steering input. |

Sorry mate. Had a look through the motorsports contacts and nothing for Michelin. I'll have to check business cards but I may not have the chap's details I'm afraid.

Unless they want to come out and say "We changed x y and z to make it better," I assume it's 10% tuning and 90% hype. If you're replacing less than a full set on your new car, get the OEM version so that it's an exact match. Otherwise, I don't usually worry too much about it.

Have the regular PSS in OEM size on my car right now, would love to test the new BMW special PSS tires against regular PSS in the same size....but it would cost too much lol.
If anyone want to sponsor me two set of 255/35/19 275/35/19 PSS tires BMW and vanilla I would be happy to put them on and do some tracking and report back lmao

The front OEM tires have a rounder contact patch and the oem rears have a typical broad/flat contact patch. So basically they built some camber into the fronts.

I'm also interested in these new tires. Any updates, Ben?
Found the article here - http://michelinmedia.com/news/michel...ration-bmw-m3/ I just emailed Brian (info at bottom of the page) inquiring about purchasing these through a supplied vendor.

For people reading this after 8/5/14, the $270 price is current as of this writing, but may change in the future.

here is the response that I received from Brian at Michelin -
The 255 is MSPN 90967 will go into production in late-August and will be available in the market in late Q3. The 275 is MSPN 69959 will go into production in mid-August and will be available in the market in late Q3. Neither tire is star-marked for BMW

Myself I don't really like the feel of new tyres...the high tread blocks tend to lean slightly on initial direction changes which can make them feel a little mushy. I think they are at their best once about a third of the tread has worn away. |
