Test pipes: When do you feel the most gains?

Low end, mid end and/or high end?
Also im going to be running without a tune and oe exhaust system.

Some guy told me he lost torque, is this true?

I felt a "butt dyno" gain everywhere. I dunno about the loss of hp claim but I sure didn't notice any.

test pipes give you gains at all engine speeds.
no way you're losing torque. something went way wrong if he did (ie exhaust leak, poor install)

you need a tune, don't go without one. It will remove CEL light you'll get and increase the gains you'll feel. Think +35-40 with test pipe & tune. Without a tune you're leaving a lot of gains on the table! It's at least 10 you're wasting and there are other benefits as well. It's $$$ but a must have. Test pipes & tune is really all you need to make this car awesome.

Get BPM's tune, you'll love it. I run BPM stage 2, turner test pipes & OEM exhaust. Excellent for daily driving, sound is great, little smell (only when cold really, goes away).

Tune if you wanna mess with warranty. I don't have a tune and feel the power across the entire powerband also.

You won't have warranty issues with a tune, its totally transparent and you can always flash to stock if you're worried about it, then flash back. There are loads of benefits to a tune beyond power gains. I recommend it to anyone. Makes most sense if you're cat delete though as you're getting more value for your $.

This is a dyno taken from our test pipes:

The torque curve is the best one to use to get an idea of where the power goes up.

After 2000-2500rpm is the real area where the gains will be felt and very much equally.

Below this the gas flow from the engine is so low that the stock primary CAT's don't really pose enough of a restriction.

It is the single best modification you can carry out and massively reduces the pressure on the engine on the exhaust stroke. With the correct valve overlap from a tune it also facilitates much better cylinder filling on the intake stroke.

Dyno Dynamics numbers.

The delta is what you should be concentrating on.

No, completely stock ECU.
Ignition timing was also equal as was AFR.

Low end is where I felt the most difference, but you can tell there are gains all over

Is there any downside of adding test pipes without a tune?

Obviously, I won't get the full potential via power gains without the tune. My main concern is for the reliability of the vehicle and if the decrease in exhaust back pressure will effect it in anyway?

No downsides at all. Whatsoever.

You are lowering the back pressure from an exceptionally high back pressure.

What does this affect?

On a basic level:

1) On the exhaust stroke the piston, rod, bearings are under less strain as it is easier to push out the exhaust gasses. Less pumping losses = more power.

2) The higher velocity of the exiting exhaust gasses will 'pull' through more inlet charge when the new intake stroke is occurring (better known as valve overlap).

Hence why we call this a derestriction modification.

The tuning, depending how it is done can actually reduce stress further.
Some tuners may do the opposite and force timing, some (Evolve) may optimise valve timing to make the best of the reduced back pressure.

It is a modification which is highly recommended.

If you do not want a specific tune just have the CEL light removed for CAT efficiency bank 1 and 2 (codes 2789 and 278A) which will be caused as a result of having no CAT's between the pre and post catalytic converters.

The only downside is the CEL if you don't have a way of turning it off. It WILL show up...once it is on, you can't tell if something else is also causing it to turn on (if you choose the route to just ignore it). There are ways to fix this other than just a tune though. This is what Sal was kind of stating on his last point in the above post.
