What will 09 bring for the M3? (US SPEC)

I did several searches and found that people would like to see changes to engines, HUD etc. I think these will be highly unlikely. I also found that it is unlikely that the 09 M3 or future model years will see the EURO seats due to Homologation costs.

In addition to minor non-visible tweaks that improve reliability (i.e better fuel pump) what changes can we realistically expect to see in 2009.

For starters, I'd like to the removal of the fugly orange reflectors on the front bumper. Can someone PS the car and place the on the same location as the 335? Does anyone have a rationale to prove that BMW will move or remove them for 2009? How was this managed in the E46?

Secondly, when do we expect to see M-DKG II. I assume 09 is to soon.

I realize that thinking of the 09 model may seem premature as the US is just getting the first rounds of 08's. However, others, including myself are already looking a t deliveries in Sept. 08 which is when, according to this forum, the builds will begin for the 09 model. In that case. It may make sense to wait a few more months.

Bottom line- I'd like to create a thread that highlights the pros and cons of waiting for an 09. Clearly timing is a factor so no need to talk about how we've waited for years etc.

Thanks

The orange reflectors will not be removed, they are DOT regulations to have reflectors placed on U.S. spec'd cars.

Also i dont think a DCT II will debut that early, or anytime soon. It basically goes into full production in June for all coupes/sedan/vert, it doesnt make sense to use it for 2 months and then in Sept. to have a whole new system that fast.

Also, is there a fuel pump problem with the M3? I dont remember reading or seeing anyone post about it, its too early to tell i guess.

You might as well just order now due to the reasons listed above, or if you really want you can wait a few more years until it gets facelifted and perhaps a new DCT version. But the orange reflectors are here to stay.

Euro seats and stand alone Mdrive are my two wishes. I doubt we'll see either - a $1500 price increase is more likely.

I very much doubt we will see any changes, other than a small price increase.

+1

I bet that almost nothing will change apart from the MSRP. Suppliers might make minor changes to parts that might have functional problems, but that won't affect the specs overall from a performance perspective. Having said that I wonder if they might upgrade the iDrive software/hardware for internet connectivity? That is bound to happen sometime soon, and I doubt that they would wait until the introduction of a new platform.

Agreed. However, could they move them or make them smaller. Why can't they be place like the 335?

For anyone with the time I've posted the link with the definition maybe someone with a lot of free time can review and share their findings.

Yea i agree, the 335i reflector location is much better than the M3's however i think maybe its due to the bumper? Either way I got painted reflectors and as long as they match the body color ill be happy.

As for other changes...im guessing LED tail-lights will be used in the facelifted version a few years from now. Also maybe a extra wheel option or two.

When DCT2 is out DCT3 is already in the pipeline. It's tough to chase the latest and greatest. Later models may be better in terms of having all the kinks ironed out though.

No kidding, I agree. Or, you may want to just wait 7 years until the 2015 M comes out? Buy the thing now, stop worrying about the inevitable changes that will always occur on cars.

As soon as we all have our cars, it's going to be...

"Oh, here is the Competition Package with the Concept wheels and big Brembos. Want to trade up?"

"Plus, we were finally able to bring the Euro seats - they're standard now."

These are both very valid points and I fully agree.

However, I am not wondering whether I should wait until 2012 to get the newer LED taillights with MDKG. I am asking about whether I should take delivery of an 08 in Sept 1st of an 09 in Nov. 1st.
I would rather wait two months if i new the reflectors and seats where upgraded and minor issues where made to improve the overall car.

In the end this seems I will have to take a gamble. I could wait only end up with an "unchanged" 09 at a higher price or get is sooner only to see worthwhile changes made a month later.

I'll consider myself fortunate as this is a good and insignificant dilemma to have considering the amount of major issues people are facing around the globe.

gadget, As the former owner of two first year BMWs (645ci and 650i)I reccommend waiting til 09. I found that although there are few major cosmetic changes in the second year, there are many small changes made in September and March. They may include software changes or hardware upgrades as well as any non safety related changes which BMW waits to implement in these months. Of course any safety related changes are made ASAP. You also have a model year newer car when it comes to resale as many do not look at the month of production.
I expect the multiple electronic systems to have software tweaks. Of course you could always have the progman updated for those, but the dealer will not do it unless you have a malfunction. I.e they won't give you the new software unless you can demonstrate a problem with the old. Not just because it's better.
I have a Sept 08 build M3 e92 (MY2009) requested.
good luck

gaurdodoc- you've convinced me, I'll wait for 09, the only down side might be a slight $ increase (1k maybe) but well worth in in my opinion.

The other thing was that the dealer told me the lease deal in 09 would not be as good as the one he offered me for 08. However, since I know there are not incentives on the 08 m3 then clearly he is full of BS wanting to sell and extra 08 since the allocation for future months is based on previous sales.

Thanks

How about cup-holder and smoker's package delete options for US cars? (I'd also like to have that little bin under the dash that they have on the 3's in the rest of the world too.)

Agreed! I two dont think there will be any major cosmetic changes in 09
but there will be software changes done for sure as I have seen done in the 7's & 6's....

One thing Im pissed off about is that the 06 E46 M3 Finished with LED Tails
and the 08 E92 M3 Went back to Bulbs! I dont like Little stupid shit that BMW Does....
Then there gonna put LED's on the Second or third year I bet!

P.S.
What I would LOVE to See Done in 09 or some time in the Close Futhur for the E92 M3 is
Get Front Bumper Sensors!!!!!!!!! Also Euro Seats wont Hurt lol......

Things like this tend to be introduced mid product lifetime or towards the end of the product life to give it some extra legs.

As to the other posts on reflectors and seats ....

You can speculate all you like on reflectors and seats ..... either way, the reflectors wont change (why would they?) ... are you really not going to buy a car because of the size or location of a couple of orange reflectors? If thats the case, you're probably mad, and shouldn't be driving in the first place.

If you really hate the american seat cushions enough, you can always purchase the european seat cushions and stick them in your car instead.
