Diff & Trans fluid
Has anyone replaced their transmission (6MT) or diff fluids and have any feedback? I am also thinking of trying equivalent Redline fluids instead of OEM. Also looks like a simple DIY.
Am looking at redline D4 ATF and 75w-140 with redline FM additive (like OEM). I used Royal Purple in my previous 6MT with great results, it also got rid of the clunky 1st to 2nd shift that all BMW's seem to have. |

I have used the redline atf in my 6mt, and at 1st i didnt notice much difference tbh.
After about a week though, it seemed to slowly improve shifts. I use to occasionally have difficulties selecting 1st gear from a stop during bumper to bumper traffic but since i put some fresh redline in it has improved this also. You will only need 2L of the atf, and its $10L in the usa. With the diff oil, I bought the genuine bmw fluid which has been specifically formulated for the m3 diff as some diffs were 'grinding' at low speeds: Trouble is that this fluid is extremely expensive!!! |

Sure is!
The FM is a LSD friction modifier and several other companies make it as a separate additive. It can actually be quite damaging to the seals too. I've been told it's only needed if you get diff chatter, but if I don't use OEM, I am thinking of using 4% to mimic OEM fluid. For S65, we need 1.25L for diff and 2.5L for trans |

Yeah buddy, but an N54. I wouldn't put it in the S65

From what I am told, BMW use the FM enriched fluid in all S65 to presumably minimise customer complaints. Strictly speaking you really only require it if the diff is a bit chattery, because FM fluid is not all positives. It probably depends on machining tolerances and driving conditions too I suppose. I'm going to use it, because it can't be too bad if OEM use it and I expect diffs to wear out anyway |

I'd probably consider Redline over RP. Their fluids seem so highly regarded, especially amongst bmw race clubs where they have also developed a 10w-60. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of their R&D and approvals supersede some of the ancient BMW approvals

Am also thinking about what fluids to put in next. Has anyone tried Penrite fluids in their car (for brakes, LSD, transmission, radiator)? If so, comparisons with OEM?

I've heard good things about penrite, a diff shop in town rate it, but I'm not sure about M's.
The Redline "75w140 High Performance" actually contains friction modifiers and lists it for use in BMW M's. I'm going to give redline a try in near future |

I'm keen to do this as a DIY job, but would really like to get the car up on to a hoist or lift. Ramps, jacks and stands are a bit of a pain.
Does anyone have, or know someone with, a lift or hoist I might be able to use? |

Next is transmission and diff oil and will be tackling that soon because I have to go in for a shoulder surgery, and won't be able to do any of this for a good two years. Unless I win lotto and but the new M3. Otherwise, with a five-year-old coming along after the purchase of this car, I am broke and no chance of getting a new one. Hence the reason I am very anal about doing everything perfectly to prolong the longevity of this ultimate Driving Machine.

Hi Duane.
Other than the piece of mind knowing that fresh fluids are in the diff and transmission, I haven't really noticed much of a difference in the transmission, but the diff is a bit quieter (still some grinding when cold and in tight, slow turns, but no longer as loud). When the old fluids were drained from diff and trans, they came out really "clean" with no metal shavings or the like. Cheers, H. |

I did a major service on my car when I bought it
OEM fluid in the 6mt and castrol Syntrax in the diff. Fuck that friction modified rubbish, it limits the effective locking of your diff by making the clutch's slippery. |
