Tramlining-Let's Talk

Guys,

Is tramlining usually caused due to a square set up? or does the tire have a lot to do with it? Is this non-existent on a staggered set up?

I'm getting the square 18X10 ARC8's in a few weeks but wanted to know if I should reconsider because of the tramlining. I intend to use the set up mostly on the track with some street use.

The tires will be either Hankook RS3's or Nitto NT-01s. Thanks!

I have staggered RS3s and I have it

Never used NT01s

If you're going to street it, I've read that RS3s are better as NT01 won't be able to get up to temp and also they wear faster (and cost more)

Tramlining is an effect caused by the grooves in some freeways that are there to keep the Big Rig trailers from swaying side to side ... and now if you get tires that "mate" with those grooves you get worse or better tramlining depending on the tire.

It's hard to judge by looking at a tread pattern -- it is best to ask people that have used that specific tire about it.
I've had no issues with PS2 or CSC3 ... PS1 did tramline (but you dont have to worry about that tire = discontinued)

IMO its really more a function of the tires themselves rather then if you are running a staggered or square setup...One of the worst tramlining tires I have run have been the Falkens-FK452s..

Alignment settings would also influence tendency to tramline especially camber settings

Also, if you are running toe out on the front suspension the car will tend to tramline more than if running zero toe or toe in.

Noticeable increases in tramlining are frequently uncovered when drivers living in the snowbelt make the seasonal changeover from winter tires to summer tires, or when any driver upgrades the performance of their tires using either the same size or going to a "Plus Size" tire and wheel package. The reason that it becomes more pronounced then is because neither the typically narrower and softer handling winter tires nor the Original Equipment tires generate as much grip or responsiveness as the higher performance summer tires. Since the vehicle's suspension works as a complete package, a higher performance tire will also uncover any previously unnoticed looseness in the rest of the suspension.

That's some vague Tire Rack Sales BS --
Of course when u upsize tires on your car tramlining could be amplifed, so could grip, uncomfort, wheel speed and other factors.
But the actual "reason" for tramlining is the tread pattern falling into a match with the big rig-trailer grooves built in to most freeways and some highways.
