i don't know that M-DCT would suffer from this same ailment, given that the dual clutch system always holds the next gear in reserve, ready to be engaged. If this is the case, the distance between gears would become irrelevant, and M-DCT launch control would outpace SMG's. Thoughts and feedback welcome.

Sounds logical to me.

M3onTwomps: SMG II in the M3 was not the same layout the the SMG III in the M5. The M3 unit was a traditional pattern 6 speed box, modified with the hydraulics to move the lever just as a person would. Since the M5 was (initially) designed to be only SMG they could afford to deisgn the box specifically for SMG and gain other benefits while scrapping the need for a traditional gate pattern.

Also the launch control software and the 1-2 shift are totally unrelated. The launch control and crippled LC we seem to get in the US is the software that holds the revs, dumps the clutch, and possibly moderates clutch, throttle and anti-spin controls to achieve the best possible launch. It is almost all software and unfortunately the software in the M3 SMG II was not as talented as the best drivers. Granted much more consistent and better than most drivers but not all.

One slight modification.....

The V10 M5 / M6 tranny has gears 1, 2, 3 located as close to the axle bearings as possible (I think the tranny has 3 main bearings), this is to add strength to the gears that get the most punishment.

Gears 4, 5, 6, 7 are interleaved between gears 1, 2, 3 and the tranny's main bearings, this is why it is impossible for the current tranny to be manually shifted.

Dont know about that.. "rich kids" love Exclusivity and Status

Their not going to get it with a 335...Every tom, dick and harry and their mother has or is getting one.

Great car but like every prv 3 series, there are going to be tons of em out there.

Just missing my old LSB on LSB M3 Cab occasionally..... Just makes me think of that Pinks song.

Would be foolish to race a basically stock E46 M3 against God knows what....

More MPH usually mean faster car and able to reach better time. In your example i'd bet the M3 is faster with sticky tires and able to post better times. This would be true if those times were obtained using similar track conditions.
@gtr hell yeah! Pm me or link me to your 996 mods!
Pull up to the scene with my roof gone...At 4242lbs and well under $40k im gonna leave this here..

12.7 @ 114

Full of spool sounds, and Exhaust sound is disappointing; its no v8 . If only both could coexist and weigh less... 2015 c63?

I actually stumbled across this thread on google the other day but realized it was made at the beginning of e9x m3 launch. Pretty interesting to read back in time.

Since this thread originated, there has been numerous publications of the e9x M3 running mid to low 12's. if we're going to compare it to the 335, let's look at it this way....one car is faster than the other stock and has many other inprovements. The other car needs upgrades just to keep up in ONE category.

Strange to see this old bumped thread mention this. Whoever would have known back at this time that people WOULD be calling non-competition package M3s the "Civic"?

I guess I'm glad I own both so I don't have to choose sides over this pissing match. Being concerned with 0-60 or 1/4 mile times is for magazine writers. I instructed and drove in Lambos this summer at IMS and was not blown away by 570 hp. While most drivers may have the nerve to pin the throttle WOT for 15 seconds, many drivers don't know how to effectively launch or more importantly drive around corners using 80% of the M's threshold. Figure out the corners and that's where the smile will be put on your face.
