does this DSG thing make it all smooth and civilised...?
i hope not..
i love the raw nature of SMG, the kick in the back when shifting from 1st to 2nd at the red line!!!!

I agree with ManzUK the kick in the back feeling is so satisfying and i really hope they use the dsg from their F1.07 car.

Well, a formula 1 car is hardly civilized in terms of personality so I would imagine it gives a pretty good jolt......

That being said, I am sure that BMW has been working their formula 1 gear box in a way where the drivers can shift mid-corner without upsetting the line into the corner.

My guess is that it should be a little more civilized for in-city driving...

My M3 DSG dream is finally coming to life. I honestly hope to see fewer M5 technology to go onto the M3. e.g M5's SMG III.
And yes, M3 DSG will beat C63's 7-Gtronic!
And, I am more than happy to take a cheaper 335i with DSG !

SMG is way to jerky for day to day driving but has its plus points when laying some rubber, the box works best on road on the limit, albeit it struggles on the track because of this..5 to 3 etc as previously noted in this thread..

the new SMG/DSG style box better be good cus i chose manual over DSG for my M3's after long tests in both..

all subjective at mo anyhow...come on beemer give us the details and i might start saving again to replace mine with a new one..

works fine for me.. can be so smooth you wouldnt even notice a gear change (and thats in s5)
just need to work the accelerator properly.

if you mean 'fast' daily driving then maybe you have a point.
but I like it notchy

I drove a DSG VW GTI and was very impressed with how quickly and smoothly it shifted down and up. For all but at-the-limit track driving DSG > SMG (unless you like getting your neck yanked, but with 420 HP you are already going to give it a big workout )

I have also driven a Ferrari F430 at multiple racetracks (yes, lucky bastard) and the SMG/F1 transmission in race mode nails upshifts and perfectly blips downshifts, sounding great the whole time. There is nothing like running 140 MPH down the main straight in 5th gear and then hitting the left paddle twice accompanied by the "whaaaa, whaaaaaaa" double downshift and then charing through a 90 MPH corner with almost 500 HP pushing you through it. Pure automobile delight!

BMW is discontinuing SMG for the 2008 550i. That was just announced yesterday. Sign of things to come?

If the DSG comes out I'll definetly get it since my GTI with DSG has impressed me well with it's shifting. But if it still comes with the SMG III like the M5 my brother has, i'll be getting the manual over it all.

Look forward to seeing the RS5 coupe, but I think it may be closer in spirit to the M6 than M3.

The 2006 335i 's enhanced Steptronic tranny is 50% faster response than the auto tranny of my 2006 330i. I will be watching BMW marketing very closely as they seem to launch a major new technology every 9/12 month on the same car model. I don't want to repeat to be a big laugh if I get a M3 aged SMG III while everyone else gets a M3 new DSG.

That's the exact point i'm getting at. The manual never gets old, so no one can say anything about it. The the Auto transmissions change so much, especially for BMW..

If BMW does a DSG type of system, I suspect they would need to fix these 2 issues....
YES, I am sure BMW will take care of that right away, for the few M3 track junkies that will buy the car for track use.
If you really think that, you might have a problem.....
