Strange text message

Got this a few minutes ago. What do you all make of it? I couldn't find anything about similar messages on Google, and it seems strange for AT&T to text someone to turn off their phone...

Figured it might be one. So I should delete it before turning off the phone? Once I do that is it safe?

its one of those network reset things or if you made a change with your data plan. or it could just be they turned off your phone for lack of payment and they turned it on.

For future reference how can you determine it's an ATT number?

I think the 1111. When I was searching for similar cases on Google a lot of people had texts that came from AT&T beginning with 1111.

yep he's got it, the 1111 'area code' is an att reserved number. Now whether or not that can be mimicked/spoofed is something else entirely, some people say yes, some people say no.

haha. You're eventually going to power it off and back on, right? lol

It sounds like some kind update was made to either your plan, service, or OS.

As far as I know, iPhone OS and baseband updates are never over the air...

I didn't update my plan or change anything and I've never been late on a payment. There was a pretty big 3G outage in my region a few days before the message, so I don't know if that had something to do with it. I've turned off/turned on my phone since than and nothing was different.

They can, it's really not that popular anymore... a year or 2 ago there was a bunch of that flying around.

It's basically only for the REALLY stupid. Computer viruses are a slightly different beast, downloading a text message virus is just...stupid

Interesting...I've had a smartphone for at least the last 5 years and can't remember being texted any viruses.

^ Not everyone got one, I did not either. Although I did hear cases of it happening, mostly not in the US as far as I know though.

Very few people did, as this was when cell phone numbers weren't given out as much for EVERY contact number... so cell phone numbers were unlisted, and generally 'unfindable'.
It wasn't the text itself, (obviously), it's what was attached with the text.
And you're right Hawkeye, the US was hit the least at the time.
