Backing Plates Now Available for E9x M3/1M
A picture of my glowing front rotors from last weekend at Summit Point focused my attention on brake cooling. (Picture here: http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=608472)
This led to my having discussions with James Clay at Bimmerworld about the very nice carbon fiber backing plates that they sell and which they use on their E92 M3 Grand Am car (which has far stronger, top-line Performance Friction calipers/rotors). http://store.bimmerworld.com/carbon-...tes-p1412.aspx Sure enough, James fit them to an M3 with stock brakes (same brakes are used on my 1M) and made the necessary modifications in their shop last week. According to him, they took ¼” of the outside lip off the outside of the backing plates with a belt sander. They also cut a notch in the plate to fit the stock caliper. (If you're interested, the cut template for this mod is at [http://www.flickr.com/photos/4691130...7628105653030/.) Finally, they clearanced the back face of the plate slightly to allow the stock bracket to fit completely correct. My set is now in the mail. Neil Last edited by MDORPHN; 11-12-2011 at 02:27 PM.. |

What function does the OEM backing plate serve?

Thanks Neil.
I wish they were $1k for the pairs for our cars. Tooling for these it pretty crazy expensive. I think the factory calls it a dust shield. |

Serve as dust shields primarily. Very little of it is used for channeling air to the rotor.

Okay just checking as now I have the GT4 brake ducts and all it does is block my airflow to the backside of the rotors.

It reduces the amount of water and debris. I remove the shields on my E46...have not had an issue.
The shields would be useful to mount a flange. Someone riveted flanges on to the OEM brake shield...which is what I plan to do as well.

That's what I intend to do also at some point. Already have the flanges from summit. For now my system stops at the inner fender liner so I'm gonna remove the dust sheilds so I get better airflow in there from my ducts.

Those carbon backing plates really look like a well designed part.

Bimmerworld E9x M3 CF Backing Plates
Got mine sitting in the garage along with GT4 intakes and hose. I don't think $400 for these CF backing plates is unreasonable. Remember that a good chunk of the price is for engineering and not just production. When I purchased my car a month or so ago, I was really surprised to see so few brake cooling options for such a large and popular car.
Anyway, I received my StopTech rear BBK last week but the fronts (380mm ST-60) seem to be on back order. I can't wait to get all of this stopping power installed so I can get to the track with my E90 M3! Do you think they will make me remove the two child seats in the back to do an HPDE??? |

You mean no CHEAP kits... We have a kit, it just isn't cheap. It is from the pro cars and weight and function are typically the primary design concerns. We are going to look at a budget kit down the road as well, but this hub and rotor size really lends itself to a carbon part more.

Just curious...does the 1M have functional cooling ducts? I'm still surprised the M3 doesn't have ducting to route some cool air to the brakes. My E46 330Ci used to.
Backing plates look awesome. If there was a hose/backing plate kit, that was removable/blockable for the wintertime (my car is a DD), I'd buy them in a second. -Brian |

The M3 brakes cool suprisingly well without ducts. That's part of the reason that duct kits are so expensive and rare - there's almost no demand for them.

The cooling veins inside the stock rotors are designed to pump air in/out. A backing plate would block this function. Because of this, you must rely on adequate air flow through hoses to the backing plates, which can only be accomplished at high speed, and constant high speed at that. I suspect such a product isn't totally applicable to daily drivers, or even DD's that see occasional track use. Two things come to mind; 1) have there been tests done to compare the effectiveness of such a kit for daily-driven cars?, and 2) do such kits affect serviceability, especially from a DIY perspective?
