3500 RPM - 4000 RPM Engine noise?

Hi guys, when you're driving between 3500 rpm and 4000 rpm with little or no weight on the gas pedal do you hear this faint sorta high pitched knocking/clicking sound? It's really hard to describe. Not exactly like alternator whine through the speakers, but more like knocking sounds from the spark plugs causing interference through your stereo. My previous car made that noise due to the spark plugs (supposedly from what the car audio shop said). You have to turn the radio off to hear it because it's pretty quiet. It does not sound like it's coming from the speakers but from the engine itself. I think it speeds up as the rpm goes up a little. Needless to say, it's pretty annoying if you sit there and concentrate on it.

From your experiences did the engine noise heard from inside the cabin get louder or quieter after the 1200 break in/ service?

I did search. The thread about engine noise was for like 2000 RPM and was described differently and were supposedly caused by exhaust expansion. I'll try and record the noise if I can later after work today. Can you show me these threads, maybe I searched poorly.

Thanks for the link but that's different from what I'm hearing. Those are like random ticks between 1-3k rpm. Mine are constant fast sounds like radio interference almost between 3,500-4,000 rpm. I think it's just the way the engine sounds normally. I'll have to drive someone else's M3. The dealer head foreman said it was normal and it's the cam shafts making noise transitioning between low end and high end settings.
