and I took a seat apart last night and fount a wire going into the headrest from the seat... what the heck are those for?

Not sure about the purpose of the wire, but my e90's headrests can tilt. I seem to remember reading that this feature was removed in 2009 for safety purposes.

^^^

Yep, 2009s got a new "headrest" design, and I believe it activates in some fashion in the case of an accident. No idea what the details of that are, but if the seat the OP took apart was an 09', the wire might have something to do with that functionality.

My 08 tilts, but only manually. The M5 has an annoying electronic tilting headrest. I hated it at the M-school.

ok i guess the headrests are fine then. i took it apart to have the leather redyed my interior color but i thought it was strange that it had wires coming from it.. also it was locked in the full tilted forward position...

THANK YOU for all the answers!
