10w/60 oil

8000 miles and car is a quart low....are you guys seeing the same thing? However, at 1,200 mile service, the car was filled 1/2 quart low.

Is dealer still only source for this uber oil that we must use?

I have just over 5000miles and I got the same message yesterday. Gonna drop by the dealer tomorrow first thing in the morning. Hopefully they top it for for free.

ya was wondering if I should ask or just go buy one at the parts dept. I didn't buy the car from any of the local dealers so I can't really expect to get a freebie as I don't think BMW will reimburse the dealer.

Doesn't hurt to ask... if they say no, then just go to the parts dept and do it yourself. Some people got it topped off for free. I'll probably get an extra liter anyway so I don't get stuck M3-less on a sunday again.

Usually the dealer you bought the car from will top it off..

They don't have to though - as per the contract, they aren't responsible for engine oil in between change intervals.

You folks have too much time on your hands.
The manual tells you that you can top off with oil that meets some basic specifications. No need to go to the dealer. Are you actually worried that some catastophe might befall your car if you don't use the magic elixir BMW pushes?

Dropped by the dealer and they added a liter for free. He didn't even flinch. I didn't buy my car from my local dealer, but he didn't even ask me my name or anything anyway.

I bought an extra quart to keep in the car.
