It seems like most, if not all, fill up with a national brand, particularly Chevron or Shell. It's very tempting to fill up at Arco when they're charging $3.79/gallon and Chevron is charging $3.99 or $4.09/gallon.

I've always wondered if Techron or V-Power marketing really benefits your car or if it's just a marketing ploy.

There's actually been a lot posted on here about this. Gas is gas when it comes from the refineries, but the difference comes with the additive packages used by the various brands to keep things clean. Certain BMWs and other performance cars have had fuel system problems with low-quality gasolines; it's best to stick with gas that has the "Top Tier" designation. Not worth it to save 20-30 cents a gallon in filling up a $70,000 car when it could potentially be damaging to use poor-quality, cheap gas.

Check out the website: http://www.toptiergas.com/

Here is the list of current Top Tier retailers:

USA
76 Stations
Aloha Petroleum
Chevron
Conoco
CountryMark
Entec Stations
Exxon
Hawaii Fueling Network (HFN)
Holiday Stationstores, Inc.
Kwik Trip / Kwik Star
MFA Oil Co.
Mileage Stations
Mobil
Ohana Fuels
Phillips 66
Quik Trip
Rebel Oil
Road Ranger
Severson Oil
Shell
Texaco
Tri-Par Oil Co.
U.S. Oil

Yep, i use Costco Kirkland Signature Premium at a very busy store near Cumberland Mall, usually.

On the road, Shell V Power 93, or Chevron Super Premium.

So let me ask this. Does anyone know want the extra additives are for California fuel? I know we have our own specific to the state?

Another question. What would/could happen if I ran 85 and not 91? Here is why I ask. My company pays for my gas but only 85. If I don't use 85 then I pay 100% on my own. I drive about 18k a year, you do the math. I am willing to pay my way but wanted to ask if it really would hurt the car.

I wouldnt use the 85..this engine is high compression and calls for at least 91. I suspect if you use lower octane the car will retard timing..but I would still be worried about pinging/knocking

I just switched from Citgo to BP. The car seems to like it a little better.

Probably a bunch of lies, but the paperwork I received said that BMW recommends BP.

85? Isn't regular here 87? I don't think I'd run 85 even in an engine that calls for 87 for fear of something going wrong. I know you can find 85 in some of the high-altitude states, but I've always avoided it (in cars that run regular fuel). I'd never put it in an engine calling for 91 at a minimum.

You are right, my bad. I meant 87. We get 87,89 and 91. They pay for 87.

This. I also fill up almost exclusively on Costco/Sam's Club gas so I wanna know, is it doing harm or good for the engine? Anyone wanna help us out with that?

Personally, I'm in the camp that gas is gas leaving the refinery, with the difference in the additives. Reading I've done indicates Shell and Chevron additives are effective.

I do try to use busy stations (fresh gas) with high flow (clean filters).

Costco refomulated their gas to use 5x the detergent additives vs. before in their Kirkland Signature, so I'm fine with that.

YMMV, of course.

Not going to do harm per se..Its all about the additives, some gas brands have better additive packages than others..I would stick with any top tier gas.

I was using BP 93 octane for a while but went back to Shell 93 octane and I felt a difference in power and response my car had.
