Don't do it. I regretted to this day selling my first ///M.

I got over 20k in my 2011. My solution is to buy a $3k beater car to put about 25k miles a year on it.

This way the miles that my car get are fun miles and not work miles.

Pick up an old 3 series for a few grand, old E36's can be had very cheap and get pretty good gas mileage. Even the M3 E36 isn't too bad on gas, my friend averages 20mpg in town

+1 on the Jetta TDI. Friend has one and is averaging over 40 mpg.

Keep the M!

This way you still have your car for weekends and holidays, save some cash and eventually get that new one.

Another option would be to move closer to your place of work. There is always a way if there is a will

Good luck, let us know how you make out.

Cheers, Rolf-Dieter

PS. In a few years the smaller version of our M3 might be on the market (see below like the smart car) then you can move again far away from your place of work all joking aside ... like others said you only live once so enjoy your car you work hard and deserve it so don't you sell it hear.

OP, keep the ///M. IMO the beauty of this car lies in the fact that it is a great all rounder. Great as a DD, fun for romp in the twisties, elegant enough for a night out and a decent track machine.

Drive it, put miles on it, that's what it was built and designed for .

unfortunately the car will be sold saturday... 3 years and feels like it was just yesterday....

i will be back for sure... i agreed with everyone's suggestion, unfortunately having to buy another car and saving the M3 is just not practical... well for me anyways...

about 3 years ago i bought the car for 43k. with 2400 miles on it... now sold the car for 35k stock i think its not bad.... and will be partin the parts soon...(some of them are already accounted for..) . dont want to hold on to it as the value dies everyday.. having to have a weekend IS a very good idea but for my own sake and judgement... selling it is the best option...

I have never felt so sad in my life...... i have owned several cars but for some reason this car was the hardest to let go... My dream car ...

reason of me selling it was due to driving a lot (4000 miles a month) i know best solution is to move closer but at this point... it will not work... my wife works at BREA Ca. and i work in Thousand Oaks... we live in Norwalk.. not fun... Also i wanted to surprise her and buy a house and buy her dream car... i guess for once i need to start on what she needs... and wants for some reason it was just all about me... LOL sad but true...

this was my 1st BMW and having to own an M3 sure left a BMW mark somewhere inside me ... so sooner or later i will be back... it might not be an E9x M3 but it sure will be a BMW...

You are making the right choice. I do understand. Good luck to you and spend the 35K wisely, as you said down payment on a house and her dream car

You are only down $8K in 4 years that is fantastic for a car like that. So you did well there too.

If your going to be putting a lot of miles on it just get something cheap. No need to break the bank I drive a 98 Elantra as my daily (most days) and rainy weather car
Same thing i do. Dodge dakota for daily. M for nice days! On a side note when people talk about beaters for secondary cars... My eisenmann race exhaust cost more than my whole truck lmao......

Well I just look at the math 43-35=8 in my trained mind

I'm sure you paid a good dollar for the mods you will sell separately.

So to do the math right you need to take 43 + Tax + mods - 35 = your true loss divided by 4 years is still a great deal I think for driving this fun machine for 4 years.

How much will the depreciation on a new car compare to the gas savings? If you can't get a second car, your best bet might be an awesome, reliable used performance car that's already depreciated: your M3. I've been driving mine a lot and since I stopped worrying about putting on too many miles or the slightest little scratch, I've been much happier. I'm at 53K and am hoping to take it way past 100K.

Babying the car doesn't mean that yours is in better condition than another (unless of course there are signs of abuse).

It's good for the car to stretch its legs.

If it were me I would just keep it. I'm so happy with my M3, best BMW I have ever owned and I have had many.

Upgrading to LCI + CIC/Combox/Snap-In/Front PDC + other touches solidified my decision. I have a 2008 2012 M3

I have been thinking of getting something for the everyday commute.. But with 40K miles in 5 years + maint contract/tire contract and extended warranty, the best decision is to keep on driving. With any decision you make, at least the car has made a lasting impression on you which opens new doors for future BMW's in your fleet.

and believe it or not i have never seen how the red light feels like...

HERE IS THE REASON WHY IM SELLING THE CAR...

i drive 65 miles one way home to work so a total of 130 miles a day and $600 a month on gas or sometimes more... i am in the process of getting a better MPG and i know what i need to get... i was going to get and store this car but for being an 08 it might not be a good idea...i dont know...

so for those owner who sold your M3 what happen... what did you do how did you feel and what did you get... i know for some its just a car... but this is probably the hardest car i have to let go... i still cant get over it.. and to think i still have it...
Sean I don't drive as much as you do, we have talked quite a bit. My work is 34 miles round trip and even at that rate it would be cheaper for me to lease a 2012 Ford Focus as a DD to drive to work, so for you I think that is also the answer. You will save almost $65.00 per week or $260+ per month. Get something economical that you can drive to work everyday and keep the M3. I save $200 a month on gas, my lease on a 2012 Focus is only $189 a month for a 24 month lease. This is just the money in fuel I save forget about wear, tear and mileage.

Sean, I think you are doing a wise decision.
I used to drive from La Verne to Vista, which is north San Diego. Clocking it at 100 miles one way, I drove a VW jetta 2.0L 4 cylinder; the car ran and ran and ran. It never gave up. I did!
I would opt for a 4 cylinder as a DD. Routine maintenance and you are good to go for long time.
