Carbon fiber hood and different seats? Is that all that makes this a "light wieght" car?

This lightweight M3 being released during the last minutes of the body type doesn't make much sense. It really seems like a back-pedal from M Division's decision NOT to develop a CSL version.

Who would buy this at this point on the cusp of the F32?

It's the perfect strategy to sell as much E90 M3's as possible before ending its production. Just like Porsche with the sudden release of special edition 997.2 911's recently.

So you're basing your judgement of this 'lightweight' limited edition M3, on the rusted out exhaust of an old pre-LCI e90 test car?

E46 CSL was only offered in a limited production run near the end of the cycle. Don't see what the big deal is if they do the same on the E9x

Technically, it only has to slide in between the current M3, and the GTS, not the CSL.

So any time between 7:48 - 8:05, not between 7:48 - 7:50.

If this thing (and its forthcoming E92 counterpart) is marketed as a CSL, there is no way in hell BMW would allow it to turn a slower Ring time than the E46 CSL it replaces. What kind of message is that sending?

"Hey, here's the update to the CSL. Also, it's slower than the older one. No really, we know what we're doing."

how gutted was the CSL compared to the GTS?

I ask out of pure curiosity, because given the time difference between the two cars, and the platform, which is supposedly so much better, why is this "track monster" GTS only 2 seconds faster than a 5 year old earlier generation car? The SMG vs DCT alone should have produced a greater time gap between the two.

If BMW said they were building it in between the stock M3 and the GTS, like someone posted earlier, i'm sure it's not gonna be one second faster than the CSL, and one second slower than the GTS.

Therefore, I conclude, this car is not meant to beat the CSL. That was the GTS's job.

We have to wait until June and see!

If the M-GmbH meens it serious with its weight saving efforts and bring this car in full "carbon-panel-trim" to show what they really could if they want ... some source quotes weight savings in the 3-digt KG range ... then this "CSL" could also beat the GTS on the NOS.
No one from the M-GmbH quotes that the LightWeightConcept would be between M3 and GTS on the Track (NOS) ... they quotes that this car would be between regular M3 and GTS terms of daily-driver/race(track)car ... nearly the on regular M3 ("...very little lost of comfort...") in daily use and on the track as sporty as the GTS.

You guys are focused a little too much on two laps of one track done by one driver. The GTS is faster than the CSL. By how much depends on the where, when, and how the comparison is made. OMG THE GTS IS ONLY 2 SECONDS FASTER AROUND THE RING THAN THE X5 LEMANS!!!

CFRP trunk lid would be nice, too, combined with hood, roof and seats that's like 200 lbs in weight saving,

If they bring it here, they'll be able to price it much better than the limited run GTS.
