I seriously cannot be the only one (M3 vs new M5)...

Who is torn between the A fully loaded 2013 M3 or the new M5

While I know there is quite a difference in price. Let's put price aside for a moment.

Stock M5 has
More power
More torque
Better track times
Better MPG
More luxurious
More room
More features
It's the new boss per Hammond

Stock M3 has
Nimbleness
Better exhaust sound
Screaming revs
Doesn't have that silly hood line
Carbon roof

Thoughts?

I'm not a fan of the new M5... I would recommend either the M3 or wait for the next gen.

Putting price aside and as a personal preference thing the M5 would have been a little too big for my liking. I think they are slightly different propositions as well.

Everytime I look at the new 3 series interior I just don't like the way the nav screen looks jammed in at the last second

If anything I'd be looking at the new M6, not M5, vs. the M3. It really depends on what your plans are...Street+Track = M3, Street = M6.

i have a 2011 f10 550i with dinan tune. i think it is a fantastic car. i bet the M5 is absolutely amazing, with all of the complaints about the F10 (numb steering, isolated ride, RFT) all addressed. but i am still getting the M3 and keeping the 550 because a) it costs about the same as M5 (in combo) and b) the M3 represents a throwback that will never return.

5 series feels like an aircraft carrier.

No matter how fast it is, it is still an aircraft carrier.

have you driven the M5? no one says that. everyone says it feels tiny. the f10 is definitely heavier than the e60 though. and the SMG ruined the e60 m5 for surer.

^ +1 every review says the F10 M5 is deceptively agile

Motorsports don't mess up their cars. and as much as the M3 is (in many minds) the sweet spot of the lineup, the M5 is the one that blew everything wide open. there was NOTHING like the M5 on the road.

and they intend to keep that crown

Has anyone actually driven the new M5? This might change more than a few minds. The reviews have been that it is a phenomenal car despite its weight and size. I'd personally pick the M5 if it lives up to the hype. Also, I don't see why the M5 cannot be tracked. I know its heavy and not a purpose-built track car, but neither is the M3 IMO. I REALLY want to test-drive one though.

Setting aside the cost and whether what you really want is the newest model .......

M3 is an everyday sports car - do you want an everyday sports car ?

If yes then M3

M5 is big saloon that is very fast and sporty "for a big saloon" - do you want a car that is a big saloon but that is very fast and sporty "for a big saloon" ?

If yes then M5

End

With me being 6'9" the idea of keeping somewhat of the M3 performance and gaining the roominess of the 5. Is what is drawling me to the idea of going with the M5

ITs a win win, you can't really go wrong with either one. It almost impossible to compare the two bc they are so different IMO. Me personally am going to stick with the M3 for quite a while. The M5 is an awesome car but I really dont have any need for the extra size.

For bigger guys, I would definetly suggest the M5. And, it's newer. I think there is nothing more fun then driving a new generation car.

The M5 looks like a great car but for that money I would get an used GT3. If I'm just strictly comparing the M5 to the M3 then yeah, I would pick the M5 just because it would be awesome to go around tracks in a heavy ass family sedan faster than a dedicated track car. The maintenance cost might become an issue though, ie cost of tires...

I felt the old M5 drove smaller than it was and I suspect based on reviews that this perception will carry over to the new. That extra room in a 5 series comes in very handy in the day to day grind. You can put a Costco sled full of goodies in the trunk, carry four adults in comfort, etc. Another thought is I find that the new nose works better on the 5 than it does the 3 series. Were it me and I had kids at home and the need for more utility the 5 would be the direction I was looking. Or if I was a giraffe, not saying you're like ridiculously tall or anything dadealus.... lol

Supposedly those problems are not on the M5 due to a different steering system and no rft

The M5 brand new is way out of my price range... but I am not really interested anyway. I like small nimble cars for track and daily use.

For the price, I'd much rather have a Cayman S or R. GT-R doesn't sound too bad either except for the lack of manual transmission.
