should I get a tune? M4 is coming out

Hey M3post fellows,

I love the E9x M3 in terms of practicability, performance, and the look. Somehow I feel it would be a waste to invest more money to it since the new M3/M4 is coming out soon. I know there would be a big gap in price range and we probably can't see it on streets within a year. When I see the new 3/4 series, I feel my E92 is getting dated but hey, I know I have a M3. In the future, the only cars that would touch my heart are the 991 TT, 991 GT3, and 458. I know they are in different league but I was spoiled with my previous 997.1 TT, California, and C63. But I really gotta say M3 are like the best of worlds in terms of price for value. Otherwise I wouldn't get a second M3 and it is a true daily versus 911's.

Anyway, back to the topic. E9x M3 price will drop more and more. Would it be wise to get a tune and DCT flash now? My M3 is a daily driver in slow ass traffic and I truly think there is no other replacement in it's price range now. The new M4 would be pricey and a long wait list. Personally, I prefer newer cars. But I have lost tremendous of cash on swapping cars in the past few years.

16,000 miles in E90 sold
13,000 miles in E92 current
I have been driving M3 DCT for 26 months now.

Why not,a tune is not the end of the world in $$$ !
You said you have DCT ,with a software upgrade this will be a huge difference, smoother, faster, and more powerfull shifts and the lag is history !
The engine tune(includes the latest 240E software)car pulles way better and runs smoother, and i can say my car consumes now - 1.8 liter/100km less.
So when your car is a daily driver, the costs of a tune are back in your wallet in less than a year.
Conclusion.............actualy the tune is for free !
So why not

A tune is like $1k. What's the big deal here? It's not like a supercharger, or BBS FI wheels, etc. The M4 won't be actually available until 2015 model year, so you are a year away, and I would never buy the first run of cars anyway. Let people who are too impatient be the guinea pigs to get the bugs worked out.

Personal choice depending on your financial situation.

Some are getting too hung up on upcoming M4. Without actually seeing and hearing M4, it is difficult to call whether folks will jump on to it.

Personally I'm very happy with M3 especially the engine. Brings a smile each time I'm behind the wheel and intention is to keep the car for a while. In fact spending more $ to mod

Only thing I look forward to is more reputable tuners so consumers have better choices of which ones to go to and maybe that'll drive down tuning price a bit a well. Nevertheless will tune very soon

Stage II tune is $999 from most vendors. Not a huge deal, really.

Even though I think the M3 is beautiful/amazing car, I wouldnt give up a 997.1 Turbo for this M3. Hell I would sell that and get the new GT3.

No I wouldn't get a tune. The gains are marginal at best, especially without echaust

I would get a gts dct tune from Alex at alpine. It's like 60 dollars. That's good value.

1) I don't believe in a tune because I can't justify the risk reward for that X amount of HP increase for void of warranty.

2) I also don't think $1000 should make the difference between if I could or could not afford the new M4.

3) If money isn't an issue, I would refer to (1) and save the $1000 for M4 tune as you are likely to see much more gains which should be measurable in 1/4 mile times.

I find the flanks and whole front end (although the M bumper helps a lot) of the new 3/4 to be atrocious, so I don't feel mine is dated at all. There was that comparison of three generations of Ms on the main page, and I found the e92 the most handsome and the e46 the most rugged and raw.

Tune is not too much and changes the car. I mean i can actually just stomp on it in 2nd gear from 2000rpm now.

you got the exhaust setup already to take advantage of a tune...get a bpm tune since that's what everyone seem to rage about and I'm sure you will be happy and will hold you over for juuuust a little longer til the new M comes out.

I initially thought I'd keep the car forever...still love to drive it but I'm sure I will be tempted to get the latest and greatest from M division.

Did you see the latest f80 shots? Omy that is nice. Always thought the sedans were more mean looking.

I like my tune and it adds just enough extra oomph to make the car satisfying. Not sure why OP is concerned about the new M4 coming out. Enjoy the car you have because it's awesome, and don't worry about the latest and greatest.

Thanks everyone for the inputs and opinions. I really do enjoy the E9x M3. I have decided I will go for a tune or at least get the GTS DCT or BPM DCT. I drive at D2 every time and I feel quite paranoid when the clutch slips at low speed and lower rpm. It's not smooth and it is jerky sometimes. BPM has a group buy with ACM test pipes. I think I'll go for that. I have a brand new iPE axle back sitting in my garage debating to sell it or keep.

M4 concept looks amazing imo

setup
1. stock x pipe + iPE axle back + tune
2. test pipes + iPE axle back + tune
3. test pipes + stock axle back + tune

It never ceases to amaze me that people ask people on some anonymous forum about what they should do to *their* car.

Meh after all the "which test pipes sound the best on MPE" threads, this is a change of pace at least.

IMO a 1K tune alone is not worth doing unless you have test pipes, for daily driving in slow traffic I say keep the E92 its got low miles and not sure if you own it outright or you have the extra dollars to loose in depreciation and trade-in value; almost better off just doing a lease program if your sight is on the newest vehicle. IMO just add a blower if your looking for more power and a few cosmetic mods to your current M3. I think a lease seems like a better alternative for you reading your post. GL
