Guys that are complaining about false alarms don't have it setup right. The defaults are way too obtrusive and leverage obsolete technology that is no longer in force. In California I turn off everything except for KA & Laser. I get 0 false alarms. Every time it goes off it's for real. Like the AMEX card I don't leave home without it.

I never speed when there's no cars in front of me. Someone has to be in front of me for the LEO to turn on his radar. That's when I get warned. Worked for the the past 20 years. I did get a ticket when he was using laser, only a jammer would have saved me in that incidence.

Yup, I have the same setup as well. Works great.

Valentine really needs a new unit that adds GPS like the Escort. Or Escort needs to add a second detector for arrows. It would be cool if it could look like a nav unit so it's not obvious if you do get pulled over. Or make it pre assembled for remote mounting.

I agree with tlp, if you tun off K and X, you'll be good to go, at least in Cali where they only use Ka. I've only had Ka go off in Nevada too.

no radar detector is going to save you if you wanna do crazy shit in residential or highly populated cities. there's just too many sensors, and too many places for cops to hide... whether or not they have you on radar. the v1 is most useful for stretches of the highway/canyon/rural areas you like to speed through without worrying about the cops raining in on your fun. for me, i've had it for a short period of time and it's saved me twice coming off a corner on a canyon road, and once nearing a hiltop that i normally fly through once i hit the peeak. Long roadtrips to Mammoth, Vegas, etc. are great with the v1.

But if you think the thing is going to keep you off of tickets by some kind of miracle of god, you are mistaken my friend.

I saw the patent deal on the new arrows. The arrows will have the alert strength built in. Pretty cool. You can find the info on the radardetector forum

More annoying than useful in town, and Valentine looks like a huge douche (I trust no one with a tie knot that small and tight), so I don't watch to give him money.

Had a couple V1's until about 7 months ago when I sold it and bought the Passport Max. I loved the directional arrows on the V1 but really like the GPS on the Passport Max where it "learns" the false alarms. Have not had an instance where it picked up a boggy as a false alarm. Mounted with the blendmount and looks great. It does drop the GPS now and then but picks it back up within a couple minutes. Not sure if this is normal or not. Probably should call Escort and ask.

I've owned a V1 off and on for years. It's still the best detection device on the market with the Passports and K-40 coming in a close 2nd. Once you get used to the arrows, you won't want anything else. It can be an annoyance in town, but you need to set it up properly to mitigate the false alarms. Don't leave home without it.

Whether a radar detector makes sense depends, in part, on your location. FHP, and locals, still rely heavily on Ka radar around here. Some county units are still running K-band (amazingly). There is plenty of laser as you go further south, but they're still few and far between compared to the number of Ka units operating down here.

The key to a radar detector is knowing how to use it, and knowing how police use radar to catch speeders.

It is unusual for a LEO to simply sit on the side of the road with their radar blaring full time. I still see it around here, but I always get the feeling that it's more of a "show of force" than an actual effort to issue tickets. Sure, you can get pulled over if you blow by them, but you have to be a complete idiot to get pulled over by a blue-light Charger sitting in plain view.

On a local level, the LEOs issuing tickets are usually standing next to their cruiser using handheld, point-and-shoot, Ka-band radar guns. They only activate the unit when they see someone they think is speeding. This means that if you're running out front, you're likely to get tagged.

On the highways, FHP will sit in their cars and do something similar. They'll only activate their radar when there's traffic. They also like to hide behind cover; over hills and behind road side brush. This means that if you're putting the screws to it down an empty stretch of road with no one around to cause LEO to light up their radar, you're likely to get tagged.

A radar detector isn't a blanket license to drive like an idiot. It is exactly what it says it is: radar detector. If you just want to drive fast all the time, the radar detector may save you in some cases, but any time LEO is running a decent trap, they're going to nab you. You have to play the environment and understand the situation you find yourself in. Otherwise, you'll keep racking up tickets.

My experience

I had a v1. It works great. It also looks old and outdated. Is is great that they'll update the software/firmware for you, I did this once in the 5-6 years I had the V1. I then dropped the V1 on a gravel driveway in 2012, it broke. I decided it was time to get into the 21st century.

SO I researched everything. I bought an escort Redline, which is great, and has a black metal (not cheapie) plastic case. Was about $500 or so. I actually bought 3 separate detectors and returned 2, keeping the Redline (an experiment of sorts).

#1 -- Passport Max, returned it. Blah. No range.

#2 -- Then Passport 9500. Looked like a cheap car stereo and no matter how I tried to convince myself that the look of a radar detector didn't matter, I couldn't get past it's cheap plastic case and it was $450 or so.

Then ended up with the Redline. I like it better than the V1, across the board. FWIW. I think it's got better range. Only thing I miss are the arrows. There is some new update for the Redline called XR I haven't yet investigated. What I like about it is the simplicity, the metal case, it feels like a high quality product, and it has a ridiculous range that has yet to let me down. I flip it between 3 cars.

Meh.. mine never bothered me. I sold it along with the old M. Since then I picked up a $35 Whistler. Doesn't have "arrows" but whatever. When it goes beep I'm slowing down and having a look just the same. One button push and the usless "X" band goes bye bye so it's fine for me. I just keep the volume down.

Where I live, radar/laser detectors are useless. Both the local cops and the state troopers use laser, usually from a great distance where you will never see them. A laser detector only confirms you are busted.

I installed the Laser Interceptors with great success. Has saved me multiple times. Worth every penny.

Which did you go with? The only ones I heard actually do anything are the Blinders and they are $$$

I've had them all. High end Escorts, Valentine 1, and cheaper brands. Nothing compared to valentine 1. The best worked 100% of the time I wouldn't trust anything else. All radars get a little annoying but it's worth it if you drive a lot.

The real search is the Beltronic STiR with the "ultrasonic parking sensor". Some people might be tempted to use that one as a laser jammer, but make sure that it isn't illegal where you live.

there was a deal recently on a Passport 9500 xi but I elected to pass...I also get the sense in the city (where I drive over 50% of the time), the unit will constantly go off.

I think passport uses a GPS related memory to store false alarms (shopping malls), is that true? Passport makes you buy a subscription service to Escort Live to get all the false location updates I believe (or maybe I'm wrong), just seems like I'll be constantly shelling out money to keep it updated.

I had a k40 hardwired in my audi TT with front and rear sensors and laser diffusers lights were in the dash nothing visible anywhere if no one told you about it. It saved me one time. Otherwise the only thing I noticed is I drove that car well over the speed limit more often then any other car (even my M3 which is much faster lol) that I owned cause I had the detector so I felt safer. When I realized that I turned it off and never turned it on again and went back to not driving like an idiot all the time. Sold the system with the TT probably wont ever buy one again.

I have this, front and rear, and the Bel STiR + and it works great. The Bel STiR is essentially the same as the Passport 9500ix (which I also have a couple of).
