Valentine 1: Turn off K Band setting?

I just switched over from Passport and noticed how "noisy" mine V1 is. I called V1 and they talked me through many of the off settings and turned off X and it's still very noisy. I also set 3 second mute on K Band and it's a little better but still goes off as I'm driving by Safeway...

Now, I'm thinking that I might just turn off K all together. Over the past few years, I don't think I've ever seen local or CHP use K here in CA. Only stationary units that simply tells you how fast you're going uses the K band.

So my question is: Anyone here in CA turn off their K Band setting altogether?

I wouldn't do it

I've seen cops use K once in a while, enough to make it worth keeping

I've noticed K band going off in 2 types of situations:

1. whenever it goes off, I usually notice Mercedes nearby. I think MB's with collision avoidance system radar emits K band...

2. electronic posts on roads that read & display your speed use K band. In these situations, the frequency of beeps get really intense.

You get used to the tones going off so you'll know when to slow down. It's really no biggie.

That's the thing, I don't want to get used to them. I noticed after 4 days with the V1, it seems to go off 4-5x more then my Passport. I don't want to get jaded with all the noise. When my passport went off, I paid attention as it didn't go off constantly. With the V1, it seems to go off every 5-10 minutes when I'm driving and it's getting "annoying" like the boy who cried wolf type...

Has anyone turned off their K Band?

I often found cops like to hide next to those electronic posts in my area. I will suffer that noise to remind me slowing down than getting a ticket.

I turned my k band off

...I turned K-Band off on my V1, all junk signals & traffic control systems.

KA is the only band to care about when you are on a freeway in southern california. I also know all the local PD's in orange county & OC sheriff use KA & laser.

I would be very careful turning off the K-Band detection on your V1. At some point you've got to decide what's more important to you. The minor inconvenience of some beeping, or being protected from older K-Band radar that some departments are still using. My V1 saved me from a K-Band ticket just a few weeks ago.

I would NOT get too comfortable with the idea that K-Band is not being used anymore. I have encountered the exact opposite several times. But that's just my experience.

I can PM you with further details if you'd like, but long story short, K-Band still exists here in SoCal. It's less prominent than Ka-Band if you look at the bigger picture of SoCal traffic enforcement, but in some local areas K-Band is still being used regularly.

No worries. I'm just curious how many others have turned off their K band. I know of a couple of guys in the SF Bay area who has. I just wasn't sure if the guys on this forum have/have not.

In the Bay Area, I have yet to encounter any LE still using K band. Maybe in the other areas outside of the bay area are still using K band's. That's why I posted here in the CA section.

If you do some more searching around, especially on the radar detector forums, you will get a far better idea of what radar threats are in your area. Plus, the more time you drive with your V1, along with the time you spent with your Passport, will give you more confidence on what threats you should or should not worry about.

I've gotten to know my area/routes pretty well, and I won't be turning the K-Band off on my V1 any time soon. This is just my .02 cents from down here, and hopefully some SF guys can chime in with better info.
