That poor cone. At least it was quick, not like the autoX killings where the initial hit isn't what does it, it's the 30 seconds of dragging under the car that causes the death.
Great vids...keep 'em coming. Monticello with PDA on Sept 26th? Limerock with PDA on Nov1? Be good, TomK

skierman64,
Just watched the vid again and noticed how well the M3 held the GT3 on the straights. PS. The guy in the Blue E36 M3, smooth lines in not in his nature by the looks of it. |

In fairness to skierman64 his lines were smooth which is half the battle, unlike the guy in the Blue M3, aggressive turn ins and getting on the power to soon only heats the tyres up which was there for all to see at the 7:53 point. |

Here's an interesting fact, I got 6.6mpg during 3 sessions on the track. Yikes.
Ok, I finally got all my video footage uploaded to the internet from the BMW CCA HPDE on Thunderbolt Track at NJ Motorsports Park. There's over an hour and a half of footage. Here are the links to the 7 sessions that I recorded. The first ones in the red (beginner) group, I was put there by mistake. A few in the blue (intermediate) group. And the last two in the green (advanced) group. The car is a 2008 M3 with DCT. Here are the links in chronlogical order: You might want to grab a Snickers Bar. (Great googly moogly) http://www.megavideo.com/?v=XBT9EIHH http://www.megavideo.com/?v=3N00U6X0 http://www.megavideo.com/?v=416M3UJQ http://www.megavideo.com/?v=DNOSE120 http://www.megavideo.com/?v=MFX9KHS3 http://www.megavideo.com/?v=YUX329AB http://www.megavideo.com/?v=NZ0BYCLG Portions of two of the above segments are on you tube: It's entirely possible, however some corners reward an early apex. Also, the cones are not set up perfectly as this was the first time the BMW CCA has been at the track and the cone placement wasn't refined over the weekend. I figure, as long as I can accelerate out of the apex and not go off the track at the track out point, my turn in wasn't too early

And he was running Pilot Sport Cup tires. If I had R compounds, I would have knocked a few seconds off my lap time and would have been even closer to the GT3. That says something about how well balanced the M3 is, IMHO. Plus, I'm giving up about 400lbs to the GT3.

Yes the GT3 is a sweet sounding car. Interesting to note, some of my friends who were watching while I was on the track said my M3 was one of the few cars with a stock muffler which they could hear from the snack bar area about 100yds from the track. They said it sounded sweet as the revs built down the backstretch.

I've had aftermarket exhausts on a previous car and found that they get very annoying in daily driving or on long trips. So while the sound would be nice on the track, I enjoy the quiet for daily driving. My personal feeling is that the performance advantage of an aftermarket exhaust is not enough to warrant the cost. The real advantages are in weight savings and sound (for those looking for that).
I also found that my stock exhaust got slightly louder after the 3 day HPDE. Perhaps the accumulated time above 5K rpm reduced the some of the muffling effect of the stock exhaust ever so slightly. I suppose if I could find an exhaust that was loud above 5K but was quiet at lower rpm, I would consider it. However, I think Id have to experience it first hand before investing that kind of cash.

I agree with you there.. I am very particular when buying an aftermarket exhaust system so I need to hear them in person too. Audio clips just don't do it for me. From what I understand however is that the new v8 sounds great with aftermarket exhaust systems.. I don't know if they are quiet while cursing though. That would be somewhat important for me too.

James, are there any brake duct kits for the E9x M3 that you're aware of?

Great write-up Skierman.
Am I wrong or don't you have EDC (not shown in your signature)? If so would the "sport" setting of the EDC make a major difference on a track-ride, compared to "normal" which one has w/o EDC?

My instructor asked me if I had and aftermarket race suspension on the car, because he liked how predicable and perfect it was for track work. I can't compare it to a non-edc car because I haven't driven one, however EDC allows the flexibility to cruise down the interstate in comfort or hit the track in sport mode just by hitting a button.
