Dealer screwed up big time!

Okay so I've had the M3 for about a month now and my dealer calls me up to tell me that I owe him 500.00 because I never left a deposit. Now when I bought the car a month ago he told me that I had left a 500.00 deposit about a year ago. I didn't recall leaving one but I obviously just played along with it and said ok. So I brought a check for 19,500 when I picked up the car because I wanted to put 20,000 down. Now a month later he's saying that he made a mistake and I never left a deposit so he needs a credit card from me to pay him 500.00. Bear in mind that I have the signed contract that says that I left a 500.00 deposit. I've already made my first monthly payment on the finance. Now I'm pretty sure that I'm under no legal obligation to pay him but I dont want to be too much of a scumbag. He's called me 3 times a day for the last 3 days and left me kind of angry messages that he wants a call back to resolve this. What would you guys do?

My strategy in my life has always been professionalism and kindness. Why try taking advantage of an honest mistake?

$500 is not the end of the world when it comes to the entire price of the car, but if you would rather keep it, I understand. But have the decensy to call him back and talk to him.

Personally though, I'd happily pay what I owe.

Best regards,
CSL

If you don't pay it the service department will figue out some way to collect the money back... "Oh we found a nail in two of your tires OMG". "Oh we don't have a loaner for you, ever." "Oh the car will be ready tomorrow.... I mean next week... I mean the part is on backorder."

Seriously, if you don't want to be branded as a pariah at your chosen dealer, pay up.

If you didnt made a deposit and owe him 500bugs, pay em.
if he cant prove your debt, you wont have to pay but you still betray your dealer... i could unterstand him and would be also angry.
dont sell your integrity for 500$ !

Heading for a unanimous recommendation. Pay it.

If the situation were reversed in some way, you'd want what was due to you.

IMO there's no "do the right thing". was it paid or not is the question. u look into ur statements and find out if u paid it or not. that's why you keep papers and statements, right?

if u havent paid then go pay it, if you paid take that statement to him and shove it up his ass and tell him to get organize... in fact tell him to get organized either way

Legally you are not obliged to pay him but paying him is the right thing to do. We know you will do the proper thing.

Agree with the others. $500 is nice to find laying on the ground, but if you know who it belongs to then give it back to them. Karma's a bitch.

Think about it....if you don't pay it the dealer will probably take it out of his paycheck. Put yourself in his shoes and the dealer shoes, we all bitch when they screw us, so be the good guy and do the right thing, call him ASAP, apologize for not getting back to him sooner and pay it. +1 Accidentally leaving or dropping your wallet in the men's room is an honest mistake...do the right thing with the dealer so if that ever happens to you, you'll get your wallet back cash intact. If that makes sense.

If you paid him the money...show him the cancelled check, credit card...ect

BTW...how did you put down a "deposit" and not give them any money? Those of us that put down a "deposit" actually gave money...I gave them $1000 to hold my allocation...I expect that money to be reflected in the final purchase paperwork.

I cannot beleive that a dealer would build you a car without taking your money...but what do I know...

But, I agree...if you owe them...you owe them...(if you don't...you don't) its that simple.
