BMW Dealership won't let me take used M3 for a independent inspection
I am very close to pulling the trigger on a particular e90 2008 M3 at a local BMW dealership. They however are refusing to let me have the car inspected independently saying they've never had anyone do that, the car was already inspected for 2 hours, the owner of the dealership would never sell a bad car, etc. etc. Bunch of bullshit basically. They are reputable on dealerratings, yelp review is mixed but only 3 detail-less reviews. I even offered to put a conditional deposit down before the inspection but they weren't up for that either.
Anyone ever heard of any other BMW dealership refusing independent inspection of a car? This one isn't even CPO'd. Also, mark another dealer that believes the M3 has run flats |

Move along if you're not comfortable with it. Nothing says they have to allow an independent inspection.

tell them to fuck off if they won't let someone else inspect it.
you should see if whoever is going to inspect it will come to the dealership where the car is at to look at it instead...if you really want that car!

Since they are a BMW dealership I would imagine they already did their own inspection. If you have a weird feeling about the car/dealership I would go somewhere else to get your car. I would also want a CPO'd car anyhow especially being an M3.
Good luck with your new car purchase. It is exciting and more so when you get your M.

Yea they are fine with me bringing whoever I want, how could they refuse that
They didn't even ask where I was going to take it -- it could have been across the street. Sigh. I think I'm going to have to make a final demand and that's it |

Tell them if it passed their inspections they should CPO the car for you. Then you would buy without a third-party inspection! If not, move on.

I could request the actual inspection documentation I guess. The car has a full service history from another local dealership and was traded-in at the end of a lease to this dealer. The tires/wheels were making an odd noise at surface street speeds during the test drive, maybe minor flat spotting but maybe they are unbalanced. |

I was reading in another thread about people who got PPIs for CPO'd cars and found frame damage and other bad shit. I think I'm going to call other dealerships and ask if they would let me inspect their M3s before purchase to see what the 'market' says. |

For any BMW...why would you have a non BMW dealer inspect it>? I mean you can drive it, talk to the tech and make your own assumption there...We've sold many 2008-09 M3's that are not CPO'ed due to the high price of the warranty. It is safe to safe your not being screwed.

Most likely No. It is an M. They won't let it leave the lot.

Not a non-BMW dealer. An experienced BMW mechanic who is an expert at M3s:
Quote:
The mechanic is recommended by a friend who owns several BMWs and has had them serviced at his own shop for years. The dealer is welcome to drive the car there himself if he doesn't trust me or can accompany me. It's worth his time to sell the car is it not? I think 99% of people would say yes PPI the car at an independent place. |

Just called two other BMW dealers that have CPO M3s. I asked them if I could take the car off lot to have a local mechanic inspect it. They had zero issue and didn't even balk at it, even with the car being CPO.

You now have your answer. Go to the other dealer and get your CPO. Good luck OP!

I would take it with a grain of salt though. They could tell you anything to have you come in.

Plenty of fish in the ocean, especially 08 models. Look elsewhere. Especially given the kind of nonsense they think they can have you believe. If that's their attitude now, think what it'll be like when you have a problem with the car...

I would go somewhere else. It is not a cheap purchase, you should be able to have it inspected if you want. Before I learned better, I took the word of a dealer that they "would never sell a bad car." Three months, and a call to a lawyer, later, the dealer (small local used car place) admitted that they never even inspected the car, they just claimed that they did. The dealer took the car back at no cost to me, but the entire experience was a complete pain in the ass. Lesson learned.

I would run away from this dealership and its bunch of
crooks ASAP. As stated here, this is a major purchase and the whole thing stinks big time. |

a PPI is never a bad idea. I'd trust the word of an experienced BMW specialist whose time I was paying for to do a thorough, meticulous job...over dealer techs going through an assembly line of cars and probably being rushed by the sales department. also, I'm surprised at how cursory these "200+" checklists seem to be, even for CPO. I haven't seen the BMW one, but the Porsche and VW ones were kind of eye-opening for me.
the dealer does have every right to refuse, but I think you'd be wise to walk away if they insist. |

Warranty is good for another year, 12/20/2012 supposedly. Car only has 17K miles so 20k maintenance will be covered at least.
It'd be one thing if they gave me a straight reason for not wanting to take the car off the lot ( something like "we don't want to put 40 miles on the car and have the value depreciate, find a nearby mechanic"). They didn't even ask where I was going to take it! I left the used sales manager a voicemail asking to call me back. Hasn't yet. So much for being eager to sell the car to me. Everything is just about it for now. |
