There are some cheaper options like sharebuilder and tradeking out there...but they won't offer you the mutual fund, and IPO, exposure that etrade, and schwab do.

I think etrade is about 7.99 a trade, although some pay 9.99 a trade. You can get others like trade king for quite a bit less. If you intend upon trading volume go with one of the cheaper guys. Otherwise go with etrade, schwab, or TD Ameritrade.

Scottrade is good, 7 dollar trades and only a 500 dollar minimum.

IIRC you have to make 250 trades/quarter to get the $7.99, otherwise it's $9.99

zecco's solid if you want cheap fees and not looking for any frills... $4.50 a trade, and you can get 25 free trades pretty easily per month

I don't use anyone at the moment, but if I were it would probably be Scottrade. I've heard that people really like the E-trade Pro platform, but that their pricing schedule doesn't justify it - Scottrades is very good and their prices are more attractive. I hope to be speaking from personal experience soon

Depends how much $ you want to invest and what kind of investing your going to be doing.

If you investing more than $10k, and plan on margin investing, I'd give Interactive Brokers a look. They're margin loan rates are extremely low.

SOGOTrade is a bit of the PITA.... I originally started with them.

Slow transfers, you have to actually send a voided check (if you're like me, and pay everything online, you don't even have a checkbook anymore), have to wait for all that fun stuff, etc etc.

edit: I just saw they have apparently they reduced their fees since the last time I investigated them... they are damn damn cheap.... i might have to switch over now
