I was told that its $50k/day to rent the track. Would have to be a very large group or very expensive per car.

Either way, I am in.

It's not $50k/day. You'll be pleasantly surprised at the price. Can't say anymore til the contract is signed. Hope to have more info in December.

track rental

My good friend in Florida just did a 2 day HPDE at Daytona (it's used as a road course too). Track rental for that is $145k for weekend. So if COTA is any less, i'd be surprised.

If it's a BMW CCA event, my guess is the track insurance still will not cover convertibles for DE events, if past Ofest's are any indication.

IMHO I think that needs to be relooked at. Yes, before the E93 I don't think BMW ever had a retractable hardtop convertible. I don't understand why a hardtop convertible is any different from a coupe or a sedan? Of course, assuming that you have the top up. If you rollover I'm sure it would be pretty hard to after the fact put the top up.

Because the federal government doesn't require the car manufacturers to provide data that compares the verts to tintops. The CCA rule will not change, it's not worth the effort to try. Its been argued since the Z3 came out. Buy a track only car (it's a good idea to have a car you can financially walk away from anyway).

I'll be running with SCCA at COTA in early March. The cost for a double national entry looks to be a bit higher per entrant than TMS (~25%) but not obscenely so given the venue.
Can't wait!

I might bring my E92 down for the CCA event as well if I can swing it...

Following the race, I was fortunate enough to get the chance to speak with one of the primary individuals behind building the track and he was very open to the idea of club track days. He even encouraged me to get as many people as I could involved and he would try to work with me on a rate. I don't think track days at COTA are going to be anywhere near as expensive as people (myself included) had predicted.

For this, you must have attended some BMWCCA driving event in the past. If so, make sure your chapter knows and has your email info. There is supposed to be a short window to register.

The Houston Autocross is in like 2 weeks. The link back to the Houston website says the tentive plans are: DE or Autocross with the Club in the last two years will be given a 3 day advanced window to register.

I've heard the registration window will open in the first week of Dec...at least that's what was discussed at the Oct DE at MSR. I think you'll see more and more events being scheduled now that F1 is done. Wonder what the prices will be?

I've heard that you cannot run the entire 3.4 mile track either...apparently it is an F1 thing. I remember when they built the F1 circuit in Korea and they closed off about 1/3 of the track for local events.

Posted about this in another thread asking this question, but the reason hardtop convertibles aren't viewed any differently is because even with a hardtop, a vert's roof is not an integral part of its body structure, and as such doesn't have the same impact absorption capabilities if you roll or (worse) get hit by another car in the roof while your car is lying on its side. Scary as it sounds, the latter scenario is exactly why even coupes have roll cages at higher levels, because any well-designed roof can handle the impact of just about any roll on its own.

We would like to have registration open the first week of December, but considering we still don't have the contract in hand...

Would like to get SOME marketing out there so the word gets out to everybody before we open registration.

I just want to comment that while attending the Formula 1 race at COTA, there were forty convertibles (open top) vehicles driving around, really really fast. If those guys can do it, then why can't the BMWCCA allow it?
