HELP! Annoying Knocking Noise on my M3!

So this ticking/knocking noise has been bothering me for the past year or so, I've taken the car to the stealer ship multiple times and they've been telling me "it's normal" which I think is total BS. The last time I was at the dealership the SA told me that their service tech has a M3 as well and that this is due to me putting "power" and "edc" modes on.

Ive been driving with Power Off, EDC off (comfort) and S3, haven't been pushing the car, and this knocking noise is driving me totally nuts. I'm sure it's not normal. Have any of you guys experience such noise? this noise only happens when coming to a complete stop, no sound when driving (atleast I don't hear it).

I already spoken to BMWNA and they sent a service request to my local dealership requesting a engineer look into this.

I have no suspension mods at all, the car is basically a Stock ZCP E90 M3, with 20k miles.

You can hear the noise in the video below... at the 0:15second and 0:48second

any help would be much appreciated!

You probably have a pebble or stone lodged somewhere..I had one stuck between the rear left rotor and dust shield..very annoying until I tracked it down and yanked it out

hmmm which sounded like that? to me, it sounds like some sort of bushing worn out.

Nooo..even if the bushing is worn out you are not going to hear a ticking/clanking noise from that and certainly not at 1-2 mph..think horses not zebras..my money is on a pebble ..mine sounded like that..

Thanks! I guess I'll take the wheels out and inspect, I hope to find a pebble and cure this issue.

I like how my SA tells me that its normal.

Def not normal. There could be a pebble stuck somewhere or an issue with the pads making contact with the rotors. Had the same noise on my 335 and dealer finally solved it by replacing the front pads and rotors..

Has the car been making the noise since you got it? I noticed that it is a DCT. Mine (6M) was a odd rattle and clunk. Dealer said it was normal. I took out another new 2012 from their lot and sure enough, same noise. That convinced me that it was normal. Try to isolate where exactly the sound is coming from. You may need another person to help out.

thanks, the sound was not there when I picked her up. was def. afterwards.
the sound is coming from the front, sounds like it is from the drivers side. I've had this issue for a while, atleast for the past year.

I had a similar sound. I noticed it while in a parking garage one night. I ended up being able to isolate it to the rear right wheel and it was indeed a rock/pebble in between the brake and the brake dust shield thing. Pretty weird, and it sounds EXACTLY like your sound in the video.

Welcome to the M3 cowbell club! I also hear this on the new M3 videos, so don't feel too bad...it's gonna be with the new generation as well, LOL!

Yours doesn't sound too bad. Do a search and you will see a ton of posts.

Does yours appear once in a while? Does it ping at low speeds, driving at slow parking lot speeds?

When I took mine in to the dealer, the sound magically went a way.

I can usually shake off the sound by pulling and releasing the hand brake a few times in a row.

I noticed it doesn't exist when the car is cold, so maybe its a small pebble stuck between the brake and the dust cover like said about. It's coming from the drivers front side... and this has been an on going issue for over a year!

haha no way, i get that clunking noise too!!

to me it sounds like its just something that happens when i shift from P-D or just in those low low speeds.

i believe it may be normal, my first e92 m3 i had for 3 years and 81k miles, and it did it since day one and never had any probs.

my new one, has only 28k miles and its periodically makes that sound.

i think youll be fine, however, getting it checked out wouldnt hurt either.

good luck

Man these same threads constantly and then even worse is people not knowing this is a NORMAL issuea with most m3's. I have driven 4 and all did this.

Low speed maneuvers when there is a change in momentum of some sort. Coasting at a low speed then slight jab on gas for example.

Search "m3 clunking"

Anyway totally normal

I had an e36 M3 that made that sound and it was actually a brake pad that de-laminated from the backing. It slid around and made a similar noise.
