Wipeout on Buzzard's Neck
Not me the e36 in front of me... I shot this at MSR Cresson TX this weekend. The video and overlays were done with my iPhone 4 using Harry's Lap Timer

Thanks for the vid.
Is that an app on iTunes? Do you have to start/stop manually, or does it do it via gps? What mount did you use? Looks cool.

Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by some of the top engineers in the world because some guys sponsored by a company told you it's "better??" But when you ask the same guy about tracking, "oh no, I have a kid now" or "I just detailed my car." or "i just got new tires."

Harry's Lap timer is an iPhone/iTouch app. It times laps, videos, and overlays gps info. It start and stops itself when it passes a predetermined start point. You download most tracks gps points direct from the iPhone. I'm very happy with it. The only limitations right now is that it only records HD video on the iPhone 4, or SD video on the 3GS, but it will work on any other iPhone as a lap timer. Also, it can only video every other lap but times every lap.
I'm using a RAM suction mount on the windshield. |

Is the data collected good enough to compare lines through a particular corner and pick out the fastest way through?
I have been using Trackmaster on Android to do datalogging, and I am pretty happy with it. I did have to buy an external bluetooth GPS so that I could log at 5hz (instead of the 1hz that my phone provided) and get enough data to really see what I was doing at each part of the track. What rate of data does Harry's capture? Can it also interface with an external GPS? |

I saw a couple of people having some issues with the app. It was usually bad placement for the gps but some people said after they rebooted the phone the lap timer started working correctly. Also make sure you don't have both POI sets (CW & CCW) on your phone, it confuses the app. If you don't have an iPhone 4 you really will need an external GPS antenna.
The Data Rate for the GPS is 1khz. |

If you click on the individual lap times and scroll to the bottom it has an "overlay" button. It takes 3-5 min to overlay the track data to the video. I've been really impressed with the app overall. Not perfect but for 15 bucks you can't go wrong.

You must have meant 1Hz for the GPS readings, which is way too low for collecting meaningful information IMO. Its built-in accelerometer might be functioning at 1kHz. I don't own one, so I am speculating...
In general, dedicated data acquisition systems have GPS sensors operating in the 5-20 Hz range. I think vbox has a high end (and expensive) system with a GPS sensor that operates at 100Hz.

Is there a way to use this app with an external GPS? I have a Bluetooth GPS that gives either 5 or 10Hz, which should be better for comparing lines between laps - wish I could use it with this app.
