Forged bearings prevent engine problems with S/C?

Hey fellas,

I'm in the market for an 2008 E92 M3 that's been highly modified. It has a Stage 2 AA Supercharger on it and the guy upgraded the bearings with WPC rod bearings and ARP bolts. Would this eliminate concern of the engine seizing, which based off what I've read on this forum is a sure thing when a blower is thrown in the mix.

Thanks,
Physics

The upgrade is recommended yes, but there's no guarantees.

Thanks for the input guys. I'm not up-to-date on the M3. Out of 100, how many would you say have this issue happen? (Obviously a ball-park estimate).

1. But I would hate to be that one. I did the bearings. Mine were not bad except for around the parting lines where copper was showing. Many more have changed bearings than have failed. So far about 90% of the bearings that have come out look excessively worn for the mikeage.

Failures after changing bearings?

Congrats because that's a very good question .
From what I know...hear and saw for the moment => O !
But probably that's just normal because replacing bearings is only dating from about one year ago, and so people didn't run lots of miles with the replaced bearings .
But I really hope it is the real fix , and if it's the real fix...That we can only see if someone pull his replaced bearings with + 50K miles on it and look to the condition of the replaced bearings .
That's why I said above/earlier that you need a fortune teller .

BMW is good at plaguing each generation with a known catastrophic failure item. E46M's need VANOS hub correction, E9X needs bearings, wonder what the F8X will be :P

S65 engine failures are relatively rare. That said, virtually every set of bearings that have come out of an S65 show accelerated wear. This is significant because many people swap bearings as a preventative measure, not because they are having symptoms.

You're likely to get two answers out of this group. The first one you've already received which is yes change the bearings the other one you'll hear is that its hype and don't worry about it. I was one who opted for proactive replacement and to change my bearings. Mine didn't look good so my recommendation is change them. There are a couple options for you right now including coated bearings and then of course the peened bearings. And then there's the connecting bolts. Many have done the vac Arp combo with no issues so far. Kawasaki and regular guy, our resident experts on bearings are saying they think the best thing to do is use the stock bolts a.k.a. BMW factory bolts and the peened bearings made by wpc or the custom bearing they are having made. As Belgium mentioned nobody really knows which one is best because we haven't had enough time to actually pull the replacement bearings out and check in any kind of large sampling. There's a 1000 page novel on this if you just do a search in any of the bearing threads when you want some bedtime reading. Best of luck to you on your choice.

In retrospect, wouldn't changing out the bearings not solve this issue since it's due to a lack of lubrication? Changing the bearings out in essence restarts the clock.

It's not certain that it's lack of lube, but some have gone with thinner oil just in case( check the 0-40 Mobil 1 threads). Its presumed to be tolerance stack / journal clearance but that's not something anyone has confirmed as a scientific fact. It's a logical conclusion regular guy and Kawasaki came to with their experience. Others have different theories like fuel quality. It's hard to say for sure. We hope it starts the clock over, but stack could lead to other failures like in the main bearings. We all wish we could answer for sure. Only time will tell. Change um out, drive like hell, have fun and don't worry too much about it. Get black stones oil analysis to check for wear metals. That's all you can do.
