I am sorry this has happened to you. Some people think that if one of these cars has made it to around 100k, then the engine must have been put together right and should not suffer rod bearing problems.

My thought has been that more and more engines will be failing prematurely as the mileage increases. A lot of these cars just arent driven much.

The repair, with a used engine and a rod bearing service on it, might be as little as $10k in parts and $4k in labor by an independent shop.

I'm really sorry to hear this , but please can you discripe your metallic noise that you heard ?

And yeah ...All S65 metallic noises are just normal for BMW/Dealers and when something serious happens it's for your/our wallet ..and of course they never heard from BF and a rebuild S65 is required !
For me personal it's BMW financial speculation from day 1 !

Thank you .
You mean a metallic ticking noise that increase and sound synchronously with rpm speed ?

Get in touch with the firms that are leading the class action lawsuit against BMW. You might get something out of it. It will also help the community.

Man that sucks to hear. Just got my car back today after having a new engine installed. I feel your pain. You can find decent deals on used engines on ebay. Should be able to nab a low mileage one for about $8500.

So ummmm....you successfully drove your car with a knocking rod for ~40,000 miles?!

..but yeah, like others have said, you can get into a nice replacement motor for less than $10K, and then part out your blown motor to help cover the expense. Here's one with fresh bearings installed. $8K

Just got mine replaced 2 weeks ago with BE Bearings @ 65k. Changed oil every 4-5k miles. I do track the car several times a year, but everything was OEM before the swap. Didn't notice any strange knocking or any other weird noises from the motor. Glad I decided to change them. Only found out about the rod bearing issue 2 months ago (was hiding under a rock).

If your car crapped out (ie loss of power) on you WHILE DRIVING, PLEASE file a complaint with the NHTS here:

https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/Vehicl...nt/index.xhtml

MAYBE, they can put some pressure on BMW to do something about this issue, like at least extend the warranty.

I'd like to start a registry JUST IN CASE this problem starts to show up more and more as these cars show up in more numbers.
My quick search shows these case.
Please add any other cases you see here. I'm hoping this will show up on a Google search and more people out there will find this thread and add to it. I'm really hoping we don't have an S54 situation with our motors too.

This was one of the early cases I remember. I can't seem to find the thread here.

This one is new to me:

There's a bunch on YouTube:

There are a LOT more on YouTube. We only have a small percentage of owners who are members here. I'm sure there are people who don't notice the ticking or don't want to potentially label their car as damaged for resale value purposes, but this is best way to show BMW there is a problem if your motor blows. It's basically how the S54 guys had their engines fixed by BMW when a bunch of cases started showing up on the net.
PLEASE add to this thread if you know of other cases.

Here's a very nice compilation of engine failures broken down by state and year by senorfunkypants. http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=935368

If you're in California and your engine blew, check out this thread where the tuxblackedo got a buy back after the warranty expired by getting a lawyer involved: http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=894665

Yeah bit confused here. I've been in a car when a rod bearing went. Had been hearing what was thought to be an exhaust rattle only at start up for about a year (and could have been). When the noise started, which was continued to be believed to be the exhaust just finally having some major issue) <10 miles and kableewie. I couldn't see a motor going 40k on a damaged rod bearing. ~500 keeping it under 1500rpms in our cars? I suspect the noise "they" (bmw?) heard at 100k was not the same rod bearing issue that happened at 140k.

Isn't it normal to replace the bearings with the rods installed? How do you use a bore gauge with the crank installed?

Not a chance in the world an engine would go 40k miles with a rod bearing loose enough to make noise.

Rod bearing labor/parts for a recall would cost them at least $1000 per car, more likely ~$1500. Not to mention upsetting people that they have to bring their car in for another recall (the overwhelming majority of which have no idea that their rod bearings could be taking out their engine, and are just happy sheep currently), and go through another break in period. And some of the jobs will be done incorrectly, as BMW dealership techs are horrible incompetent, which would probably mean they'd have to replace 2% of the engines due to failure due to ineptly done labor anyway.

Math pretty clearly states they shouldn't be doing a recall.

And that's all based on a 2% failure rate, which is likely way too high for the warranty period of the car.
A very reasonable analysis right along the lines of the Fight Club movie recall analysis... Even if only 50% of folks actually did their recalls, with these numbers (used $1500 not $1000), and a production volume of 57.6k vehicles, BMW would still be paying well less than half (saving right about $20M USD) by NOT doing a recall. Simple math, business 101.

On a loosely related note, any summary of the class actions? Too lazy to read those various threads.

You don't. That's why plastigauge exists. It will tell you if your clearances are in the ballpark and identify journal consistencies. The only way to get precise measurements is with a bore gauge which will require crank removal. Not cost effective and arguably unnecessary for an engine having their bearings replaced as a preventative measure. Its a different story if you're building an engine from scratch- it's part of the blueprinting process.

Really hoping not to add my name here.
2011.75 DCT sedan
Just 17,003 miles
Died when pulling off into a turn lane to make a u turn. Car is not tracked, hardly driven (only 4500 miles since march 2015 when I acquired it)
No error car won't even attempt to turn over.
More updates as I hear back.
Dealer serviced until warranty ended. One trip to the dealer since. Oil meter was in the middle.

Nothing I can recall... Honestly I wasn't listening for anything since the car was such low miles and later model. Perhaps it won't be bearings. Hopefully

Wow Houston, that is crazy to hear. Would be curious to hear what is determined. Assuming the Dealer will take care of most of the cost.
