moving to an x5, traded my m3. what i paid...
Thanks for everything!!!!
Unfortunately, with an 8 mo old graduating from an infant carrier to a convertible baby seat soon, I've had to grow up and get a family car to replace my e93. I loved my car, but between the baby, my wife, my stupid $800 stroller, and all the other S*** I have to lug around, it's just not going to work. I live in NYC, so can't justify having two cars either (since we use our cars once a week - maybe!) So, just traded my car in for a used x5 5.0 2011 today. When I drove to the lot, I considered a new x5 3.5 2012, but after driving the 400 horses and 450/lb of torque in the 5.0, I had to get it. It cost me more, but coming from an M, needed the power. Also, while I love a new car like anyone else... I cant mentally get over the depreciation on day 1 so I like to get my cars after someone else has done that favor for me... X5 2011 had about 11,8k miles on it and was asking $58,8k (Down from $60k and change two weeks ago). Absolutely excellent condition, flawless inside and outside. Someone took good care of it. After negotiating, the dealer and I agreed on $56,9k and shook hands on that. The trade in value for my 2008 E93 M with 16.5k miles wasnt great, but I'm ok as the price on the X5 was ok. In fact, I prob gave up too much on trade and we agreed on $46.5k. YES YES, I know, if I went private sale I probably cld have gotten another $2-$3k, but I wanted to sell it quickly before the summer is over. When Sept comes, interest will fade for a convert... SO ALL IN, my trade was the 2008 e93 m3 (16.5k miles) for the 2011 X5 5.0 (11.8k miles) + $10k. Finally, funny enough, I've only driven my M3 for one full year now as I bought it used with about 8k on it for $56,2k. That means, all in, I paid about $9,700 to drive it for 12 months = $808/month with no money down. Sales tax I paid when I bought it gets transferred to my new car, so I wont count that. All in all, wasn't a cheap experience to own the M3 and buy my X5, but I think I can live with the deal in hindsight Would be interested to see what others think about my purchase / trade in. Thanks and good luck all.

You made a big mistake. I traded my e90 M3 in for a 2012 X6 a month ago for similar reasons as yours. I have regretted it everyday since. I loathe driving the X6 and miss my M3 dearly

Kandaddy, My gut is I will feel the same way you do... but at least you had a sedan... mine m3 was a convertible and just absolutely tiny inside with baby seat and all that other jazz. Either way, ill tell you guys how i feel a couple months from now.
chriszeh, i wish i cld, but i alread pay about $500 a month for one parking spot, so two would just be masochistic, in my view.

Seriously why don't people consider the E90 M? What makes you need an X5 in new york? I think a stroller plus some other stuff could fit in an E90 easily. Lately I've seen quite a few people switching over to X5 or X6(WTF). The X6 is probably less practical than the M3. You don't always need an SUV if you have a child!

I couldn't sell my '08 with 8K miles and $2K+ in desirable extras for $47K, so as far as the trade, you did FANTASTIC, especially including the tax advantage. Where dealer probably got you was on the other car, but I know nothing about X5s. All in all, ten grand difference sounds like a very decent deal overall. Congrats.

Specifically, regarding your question of "what makes you need an X in NY?" I dont have to defend myself to you on why I think I need a bigger car. If you must know, my wife and I have a summer home a few hours away and it's impossible to fill everything in my convertible. SO I wanted something bigger. I rarely actually drive my car within NYC (most people here dont), and use it for weekends and vacations. My question for you is what makes you think you need an M3 in the an island smaller than connecticut?

Was in your boat and sold my vert for an E90. Miss the top down days but still love the M and can easily fit our two kids and my wife and I (even for longer trips, comfortably.) not criticizing the X5 just saying if you tire of it have a look at the E90 (or F10 M5.)

Normally i would say hey your an idiot, go buy an e90 m3 or keep the e93 and buy a cheap suv for those summer trips.
BUT, I'm a new yorker also. Everyone else fails to understand parking here is more than a lot of people's car payments! He's paying $500/month for 1 car (thats not even the highest priced parking over here) plus insurance inside manhattan is crazy high. So good call. But i think ull get bored in about a month or two. Id get a cheap sports car that you can leave somewhere outside of the city for cheaper parking (i use to park in LIC for $100/month). |

As long as you got the M-Sport pack, you didn't make a mistake. The painted body panels and wider tire/wheel combo makes it nearly as nice as the X5M. That thing must be a monster, you can probably pull on my RS4 That will be an entertaining grocery getter/family car for sure.

OP, you already made the decision and just move on... I'm sure the wife is happy as well. But personally, after owning SUVs in the past, my E90 M3 is the best of all; plenty of room and still very fun to drive.
$800 for a stroller dude??? That might have been the bigger mistake I have two kids, and the best stroller we ever had was the cheap A$$ strollers from Walmart ($20)... lightweight and they took a lot of beatings. |

OP, congrats on the new ride. I am with the others that you will likely miss your M and I too probably would have opted for the E90. But with that said you gotta do what works for your family and makes the wife happy (happy wife, happy life ). So enjoy the X5 - you could certainly have made worse choices. |

Congrats on the deal. Hope you enjoy your new car.
I'd buy E90 M3. I assume you can put a roof box on it too.. You can haul as much as you want especially if you have only 1 kid. It is funny, we are discussing in another tread why cars are getting bigger... This is why 10years ago, we would use a car about the size of ford fiesta to go to our summer house. 2 grown-ups, 2 kids, and all bunch of stuff.. We would fit. Not comfortably, but we would fit. So given how big the current 3 series is, I don't personally see a reason for an X5.

Not so much a reply to the OP, since the deed is done and he has his reasons for making the switch, but you don't need an SUV to haul around one or even two kids. Why people suddenly feel the need for giant SUVs and minivans once kids come along is a complete mystery ...
... then again, if I was hauling around an overpriced Bugaboo stroller that doesn't fold down for cr@p, I guess I might need an SUV too. Seriously, get a Maclaren (stroller, not F1). Last edited by Foodle; 08-19-2011 at 10:12 AM.. |

Dude that sucks parking is so much I can see why you wouldn't do that. I love my X5 so you should be fine. Won't be an M3 but some added utility.

Now some of the folks here probably think I am dumb b/c they think an e90 M3 should be a good family car. But as my daughter is growing and having other interests (skiing for example) the M3 was just not cutting it in storage or winter driving department. Now the X6 does look awesome and I do get a lot of looks as it is rare to see them around, but that is where it ends. It is just not that fun to drive and I'd never go drive it just for the hell of it. I did drive an X6M and agree...it is a blast....but the pricepoint is a joke. That and I need the gas mileage to be reasonable as I commute in my X6. I was always able to get "decent" mileage from the M3 as well. I did not opt for the X5 because I drove it and hated it. It felt huge and heavy. Not at all like my previous X5, an 05, which felt very car-like and was fun to drive. The X6 is a lot more sporty and nimble compared to the current X5. But now that the honeymoon is over, it's not nearly as fun as I had originally thought. Oh well...live and learn. If I had to do again, I would have gotten an Explorer or 4Runner and kept the M3 for a fun car. I am on the passive lookout for a cheaper, high mileage e92 M3 for a weekend car so I am sure I will run into one that I like eventually. Until then X6 =
