M3 v. 997 drag?

Not talking about a track as I know porsche has the upper hand on almost any of their 911 models but as far as a straight line race from a roll how do the straight line speeds stack up with the regular 911S and the GT3? (I know their is a mid-model upgrade but either one I am curious about)

Just curious how the 4 litre V8 compares to the 4L flat 6 (or 3.9l) in the gt3. Both must be two of the greatest engines ever but I have not had priveleage to drive the porsche

997 would be close to the same in acceleration
997S is quite a bit quicker
997 GT3 annihilates the M3

So you have driven all three?

Anyone else who has actually driven them can chime in?

I've driven all 3 and between my 911s and my m3 it's really hard to tell which is the faster car. My m3 feels faster because of the shorter gearing and more responsive throttle but when I ran em against eachother the Porsche pulls pretty easily at higher speeds. They gave me a standard 911 as a loaner when I serviced my car and that felt a lot slower to me than my m3. The gt3 on the other hand actually feels a lot faster and more powerful because it is.

Well shorter gearing does feels more powerful because it is! It puts more torque to the wheels which essentially is power to the ground so that makes sense. Shorter gearing means the power is sustained for a less period of time if you compare all else being equal, however thanks that was good to know from someone who has actually driven them.

I would love to see a 30-130 roll between this lineup. I like this comparo because all the engines are pretty similar specs but achieve the specs by an extremely different configuration. This 30-130 pull would really illustrate which ones AUC was superior rather than just peak numbers.

I've driven both a 997 and 997S, I believe the M3 is right in the middle of the two.

I have an m3 that has a couple extra additions here and there in terms of power and will be taking my co-workers new 997.1 C2S out for a long cruise this weekend. I will report back here with my impressions in terms of power.

Both his car and mine are 6mt.

i have an e93 and have driven a pdk enabled 997S and think they are basically the same, the porsche being lighter and the m3 feeling a bit more solid. the porsche handles maybe a touch better, but most of us are not good enough drivers to really be able to discern (me included.) the m3 is an infinitely more comfortable and user friendly car with a real back seat and trunk (except e93) and I think the exhaust from the M3 sounds a lot better than the flat six. the porsche is a better looking car and definitely rarer, although i do not see that many m3's in my neck of the woods.

Honestly do you have that much free time to nitpick and argue about something like this? Especially since you like to choose words to make it out of context-

I actually said "anyone ELSE" who has actually driven them which clearly means you are so quick to try and be an internet bully that you do not even read the sentence correctly. If you still do not get it, this implies-anyone ELSE refers to me acknowledging I am looking for people like the responder who has actually driven the cars v. just talking or riding in them

I did drive the 997.2 C2S with manual, I have a GT3RS and the M3 all manuals.
Did not do a drag race with the C2S but drove it back to back with the M3. They are very close. My M3 has filter AA exhaust and ECU tuning. The M3 acceleration is very smooth, deceptive in a way. I thought at that time that the M3 is a hair faster than the c2s.
The GT3RS is much faster than the M3. I did drag race with it, well my wife was driving the M3, so the shifts may have been not so crisp but the GT3RS easily pulled 3-4 car length on the M3 from 40-100 mph

A 997.2 911s would obliterate an e93 m3. Handling is also no comparision. My m3 feels like an x5 after I drive my Porsche an I have an e92 with zcp. I can't even imagine how heavy a e93 feels.

I owned a 997.1S with AWE cats, Borla mufflers and the X51 intake, I felt my E92 M3 now would beat it. If the 997.1S has an advantage to me it was only at the launch, once moving the S65 motor is too much. Now along comes a 997.2S and then its a different story, it would be close but the edge goes to the 997.2S. One thing about the old 997S either .1 or .2 variant. The engines feel lazy compared to the S65, doesn't mean they aren't propelling the car forward but the surge to redline seems more voracious with the M3s V8.

Wow I just saw this. So pretty much the m3 is quicker than the carrera S (as long as the m3 is not a vert!) That is pretty good considering the porsche weighs much less. Gotta love the sleep aspect of the m3!

The 911 in this video is the first generation carrera s with only 355hp compared to the m3s 414 plus the m3 has a dct while the Porsche is using a manual.

So what? The porsche still weighs probably 400 pounds less and this was a vert so it probably weighed closer to 600-700 less.

Even a 997.2 s with a m3 coupe/sedan would seem to be quite a close race. I still think it is impressive given the 911 is the protypical (non-super supercar) sports car in the world

Here is a link of a 997.2 s destroying a dct m3 coupe

I'm sure most people on this forum have seen this video.

I had a 997.1 GT3 w/ sharkwerk track exhaust prior to the M3. It was very agile and pulls hard either from dig or roll thanks to the rear 305's. Its definitely all around faster than the M3. On the other hand a turbo 911 is a monter if we're talking drag racing hehehe.

I owned a 997.1S, have driven several 997.2S, and currently own an E92 M3. I have no interest in drag racing either car, but the Porsche is faster. On a road course, where driving skill comes more into play, and assuming each is well driven, the Porche will be faster also. The M3 is the easier car to drive, and some will misunderstand the Porsche's potential by observing one not driven very well. But it seems to me, sports cars should be evaluated more on personal preference and driving style. I recently bought a Cayman S, which I find more fun to drive than either the M3 or the 911 platform cars. It's power deficiency will hold it back on the more open courses, but it's sure fun in the corners.

I completely agree. I'm actually in the market for a cayman R, which is the best handling car I've ever driven, less power than my 911 but simply amazing through the corners.

Okay I hate to be the one to ask this but where would a COBB stage 1 only 135i fall in that group. Or an 1M (which I'm not even sure is faster than a tuned only 135i)
