paid cash for a CPO E90 M3 + all the dinan / stoptech upgrades.

basically it's my dream car and the best car i have ever driven... 4 doors makes it suitable for the kids too.

i hate to say this but... YOLO... no way to know when your number is up and no guarantees that the next 5 years will be as good as the last 5. i threw caution aside and bought the car because i'm afraid one day i might not be able to do it and would regret never having done so.

if the next 5 years ARE as good as the last 5 then i'm going to add a Lotus and / or a 911 to the stable . Work hard play harder.
Absolutely agree...I'm 26 and just had my '06 Audi A4 crap out on my a month after paying it off...I thankfully have a great job as an engineer with no student loans left so I figured that now was the best time to jump into my dream car while I have no other obligations...grabbed a 2011 CPO and picked up an '05 Cooper S as a daily driver. It's actually cheaper for me to insure both cars vs. only having the M3 on the policy.

I love driving the M and would never forgive myself if I passed up the opportunity. By the time I'm married I'll most likely have the car paid off and then I'll never have to have the conversation "but hunny this is the only crazy/childish/fiscally irresponsible thing I'll ever ask for...I promise....please?"

The other important factor here is new vs . used. I don't begrudge many people from buying a used M3 for $40-50k, with a little money down you're not looking at huge payments. I don't see many under 30's sporting $75k 2013 M3s though, and I think that's what many of the "adults" on here are potentially assuming.

When I was 21 I had a $20k note on a 350z, made like $18/hr but went to college and lived at home, payment was like $380, no big deal at all.

I graduated debt free, had an excellent job making good money while I was 22 and I remember going to Lexus, Mercedes, Porsche, and BMW and all the sales people were extremely rude to me. The Porsche sales person told me they don't do test drives (I was checking out the Boxster S at the time).

Only the dealership at Infiniti treated me like a human so I ended up getting an M45. After getting married, having a kid, buying a couple of properties, priorities definitely changed. However, I'm 31 and I've always wanted an M3 so when my lease is up, I'll be getting an M4.

I've seen colleagues spending more than a year's salary on cars. That seems financial irresponsible but I'm not hating on them.

So what is a good ratio for car price vs income?
You really can't use a fixed price to income ratio. Someone making $50k per year may buy a $30k car. That doesn't mean someone making $500k per year will buy a $300k car. Too many other expense variables also.

I'm 23 and own a 2010 E92. Bought it preowned. No college degree. I work for the railroad and make anywhere between 90-110k a year depending on business.

i hope people are being honest. But it's now 2013, and a pre-owned M3 is well within reaches of most late-20s.

Dude if it's on the Internet then it must be true.

And yes if you go used, especially higher mileage used then you can afford this car.

I choose to make poor monetary decisions that's why I bought new with all the options.

Now granted I was 29 when I got my 2013 E92 M3 but I was living on my own and it wasn't a bad financial decision...............I have no kids, my M is my BABY. I feed her the finest, highest grade golden juice I can find, she's got an excellent health plan both from BMW as well as the insurance company just in case, I buy her the best of anything she wants.(Well it's what I want!) This car is worth every penny and I don't give a F*ck!!! hahaha

My 26 year old daughter bought a new BMW E93 M3 when she graduated from Harvard Business School using a portion of the signing bonus she received from the Fortune 25 Company that employed her.

used m3s really aren't that expensive these days. 09 coupes with relatively low mileage can be had near 40k. that's less than your usual brand new Tahoe or f150 that you see cruising around. a brand new m3 coupe for 70k is a different story, and is out of my league.

I have a pretty good job and paid cash for my used m3, and would imagine most here could do the same and then some. I am 30 years old and was fortunate to graduate with no debt thanks to my parents paying for school.

I'm 26, bought my car used with my money. I live on my own. I live in the bay area so there is no way I can afford a house/condo unless I'm making over 100k so I bought my M3. Was it the most responsible decision? No. Do I have any regrets? Hell no.

Late to the party here, but I figured I would jump in.

I am in the middle of options 2/3. I sold the car that my parents bought me for college ('08 WRX - $15,500) and paid the M3 off with my summer earnings/savings from co-op jobs. While all of my friends blew their load in college, I invested and made a decent chunk of change. For some reason, this prompted me to make a horribly irresponsible choice to purchase my M. Like many others, though, it was always my dream car, and it has been and will be worth it forever.
