The little things...

Interested in the little things owners may have noticed about their cars, good or bad its the things that interested you when you first saw them -
could help out new people to the car, just a chance to whinge or talk about some of the amazing things you have noticed on your cars, no flaming please - we all have different levels of automotive knowledge...

Example:

It was an early morning and I was getting up very early to drive to work,
Absent minded I put the key fob in the ignition and noticed that I put it in upside down - For the life of me did not know you could do this, but its good to know!

Also, Cleaning the 'bmw' inserts in the wheels to attach new ones as mine were getting a bit gross I noticed they are actually made in Italy!

I realized the other night that when you are making a turn at night, the headlight that you are turning toward into will get brighter allowing you to see more into the corner.

Another headlight bulb actually turns on, I don't think it gets brighter. At least that's what my car does. And the headlight will swivel in the direction you turn the steering wheel.

The turn signal always cycles through a complete tuck-tick before it shuts off.

Sorry, I wasn't very clear. If you're turning and the turn signal cancels after you complete your turn it never cancels halfway through the clicking cycle. Yeah, it sounds funny when I say it. You always get a full tuck-tick. Never just a tuck-tick, tuck-tick, tuck. Even my old 2002 330I did this. It's nothing new. At least not for BMW.

If you happen to be sitting in your car with the iDrive screen "off" (I dunno, you MIGHT--sit in it listening to music or whatevs...far be it from me to judge), you can still soft-touch the memory buttons, and the screen will wake up and tell you what the buttons are assigned to with just the strip at the top, and then go back to sleep as you release them.

Headlight washers (if you have them) activate only when your headlights are on, and only every 5th pull of the washer jets.

There's a couple of similar threads which have a lot of interesting tidbits and some comedy as well...

10 Things I did not know about my M3

For example in the thread above.. I did not know there are handholds inside the trunk to close the trunk without touching the paint. Only way I close the trunk now.

Cool things I've learned about my E92 M3

its weird, Audis, Jeeps, Chrysler they turn off their left or right headlight when a turn signal is on, but BMW shines more light towards whichever turn signal is on...

when i was driving at night and noticed the ambient lighting for the first time, it put a smile on my face.

pulling highbeams when car is off will activate follow me home lights.

on non c/a cars putting in the key, starting the car, turning off and taking out the key will allow you to start the car again without the key if you don't open the doors.

cornering lights allow you to see a lot more when turning.

Another one related to trunk is that while you are closing once the trunk lid passes that resistant point you let go and it will fully close so you don't have to slam the trunk from the get go.

Right.

The handles basically force you to let go at the point you mention... or maybe my arms are retarded.

If I remember correctly, when I discovered this on my old 328xi, people in e90post said its supposed to be a security feature of some sort. Whether or not it is idk but its deff a feature from BMW themselves so it wont mess with the computer.

Interesting. Always wondered why my headlight washers turned on sometimes and most times they don't.

I just discovered the trunk handle thing the other day... After almost 1 year of ownership... And it was all because I didn't want to get my gloves, then in turn the steering wheel dirty. Thought to myself why don't I just grab onto this... Lol
