Dude, if you think the M3 sounds more like a nascar engine than a formula one engine, well, I'll let someone else rip into you.

Nice post! I actually at one point considered trading in my E46 M3 for a new 2008 Corvette with the 430HP engine. I can thank my wife from preventing me from making a tremendously poor decision. That engine is work of art, kind of reminds me of an old side oiler from the Cobra days, but in a modern twist.

I have to say, its sounds more like a NASCAR motor than an F1 motor. But I don't think that's bad at all. I love the sound of the NASCAR V8s. I'm sure it has a lot to do with the fact that the M3 and a nascar motor are both V8s turning about the same RPM at speed.
Regardless, I love the sound and it doesn't seem overly quiet as some have described. I can't wait to take delivery. I'm really curioius if they were using stock brake pads and also if there was any brake fade on the track. I heard a little squeel from the brakes a few times during the video, so I'm thinking they were race compound pads. OzStriker, any idea on the brakes? Did you notice any fade?

Here's some well done recording of the M3 noise (even of the ACS M3 one...)

It's an amazing engine... and not too much in common with NASCAR... but one thing the M3, and virtually every piece of American iron, do have in common is a cross plane crank. I found some good pics here if there's any question on this one:
http://www.kenrockwell.com/bmw/m3/2007/engine.htm A flat plane crank would give the sugary sweet Ferrari-esque / F1 / Champ Car / etc. ripping sound, but it comes at the cost of increased vibration, so is probably out of the question for a BMW production car. Physics is conspiring to make the M3 sound like a Vette and there's no way around it! Damn. |

I have not noticed any fade on the track or in my own car during some pretty hard consistent stopping. |
