The '09 and newer HD based system is much faster. You can have the maps on the bigger side or do full screen.

I'm also interested in this although it sounds like the price might be pretty high and require Technic to pull off.

Yeah, I knew about that, but rarely use nav anyway, and don't care for full screen either. I actually like the split screen quite a bit. And have never had any trouble with slow loading, so not an issue either.

I was curious if the new iDrive had any more functions than mine.

I just wanted the OS.
I don't care for the buttons nor the HD if there's a HD..
-The >08 iDrive is just too DOS.

Someone mentioned before in some older thread it was cutting into $5g's to do the swap and requitres coding which I hope Technic figured out

You're the man! Hoping to get your details soon, so I can get underway to installing this

Anxiously waiting for the details. I don't mind the older style controller but the newer screens and the details look so much better.

Before...

...after:

Notes:

- Voice Control is not yet activated as the P/N of its FSC is not known yet. The import method is the same.
- Convenience Plan will not show the new screens (BMW Search, Fuel Prices etc.) with this swap. The TCU needs to be coded for 2009 specs. Google Maps "send to car" feature does not work for the same reason, either. However, Assist can send you the address to your iDrive the same exact way as Google Maps. Working on a TCU coding solution.

The activation was done with genuine OEM FSC codes generated with my VIN; the import of the codes into the CIC was made by a remote connection thru the Internet. This method applies to either used or new CIC, so this can be way cheaper than what I paid. Coding of the CIC -to match VIN options- can be also performed with this method.

I spent some $3300 in this retrofit, but in reality ~$1200 out of that was totally unnecessary after the fact. So done right, with a combo of used/new parts it can be done in full for $2100 -$2500 depending on the price of the used parts

Full details can be answered on a case by case basis by PM; contact forum member: http://www.e90post.com/forums/member.php?u=59568

What are the differences (other than interface with more buttons -which I don't like) between the 2? I drove a couple of M3s with the newer iDrive and all menus and options seemed to be there. Only difference I learned a few weeks ago was that '09 iDrive has a night mode, and '08 doesn't (at least I couldn't find it ), but don't care about that either. Anything else? Thx.
For me the difference is that now I have what I consider the real iDrive, not a rehash of the E46 M3 OEM Nav with a knob that I also retrofitted in 2004.

- the screen and the details are much nicer and sharper
- the menu is much better arranged
- the GUI is much better
- the extra features -trip planner, 3D, HDD, HD Radio integrated- are welcomed
- this is an expandable platform. Once I get the Assist TCU re-coded then I will get all the Convenience Plan features that I could not get in the old iDrive.

Thanks man. This is my first (and last) M3, so I'm not familiar with the E46. Fortunately I don't need any of those changes, but to a techno freak, I can see how those improvements might affect resale of '08s, since the money required to retrofit iDrive could be spent on an '09 instead . Looking at the bright side, I much rather have my knob than the new one, but it's hard to understand why the hell BMW changes iDrive after the first freaking year of production. Crazy. Thanks again.

This is great.
Im planning on keeping this M3 for a very long time.
I am planning on eventually updating my iDrive for sure. Thanks for the updates.

This is impressive. The cost isn't so bad but, as you mentioned, this probably will void any warranty on the electronics.

In any case, it is great to hear that it can be done!

What parts do we need then?

Is it used/new:
  • CIC
  • HD screen
  • Cabling from HD Screen to CIC
  • Centre Console IDrive Controller

And thats it?

  • 2009 CIC (2010 CIC has Sirius Tuner built in, so it could cause a conflict with your existing trunk mounted tuner if installed. If not then 2010 is a better CIC to swap than 2009)

  • CIC Controller
  • Centre Console
  • USB port

... plus coding and FSC import. No OEM wires to cut, all connectors match except the screen connector which needs to be swapped to a new one. Details were posted before...

That's it.

NA 2010 DVD maps loaded...

Notes:

- This is a 2.5-3.0 Hrs load. I used a heavy duty battery charger during this load.
- DVD set (3 discs) P/N is 01 99 0 037 287. Cost is $6.94 at TisherBMW, however the Map FSC are $180.00. My Map FSC came with my Nav FSC.
- Either the FSC is loaded by the dealer or by the customer using a 20-character code included in the Map FSC files as a pdf document.
- So far I have seen no radical difference between the 2009 and the 2010 maps GUI.

BMW Search fully functional

Notes:

- BMW Search is part of the Assist $200 Convenience Plan
- a GSM TCU with the latest firmware is required for this feature to be supported. Good news is that if your M3 was built after 03/08 and has the latest software then BMW Search will work with your current GSM TCU firmware, no extra coding required.
- for this feature to be enabled in a retrofit CIC the coding requires to change the Vehicle Order temporarily by adding options 6VA, 615 and 616, and coding the CIC with this new VO by default. The CIC will automatically pick up the correct settings for the Online Services data packets without any additional coding. This can be done with NCS Expert and most probably Autologic.
- Google Maps "send to car" still does not work. My guess is that my TCU needs to be coded to enable MyInfo, as the CIC already has MyInfo active.

how much are the FSC codes? I'm tempted but I don't want to gut a brand new car only to find out this won't work.
