Could be a reasonable move for them. No brand overlap in terms of customer base and Volvo doesn't lose money.

The only thing I would be afraid of is the move to a common engineering platform - i.e. shared engine/chassis technology that always seems to come out of such mergers. Volvo's are FWD for safety. BMWs are RWD for performance. A common platform would be a disaster for either.

First off BMW is not stupid to change they're way of building engines and cars because of a merger. If anything we will see changes to Volvo but it will not affect BMW.

Is there any new info regarding the merger? Last I heard, it was a just a rumor that Ford denied.

Here's my guess..if this is true, and Ford sells Volvo..it basically marks the end of Ford.

Looks like GM will be the only American automaker left in 10 years..

I wouldn't mind BMW buying Volvo, but for Ford's sake, I hope it's not true.

I wasn't saying that they would definitely do this, but the problem with mergers/acquisitions is that they are intended to provide cost efficiencies. I doubt we would ever see a BMVolvo designed from the ground up, but things like engines, electrical could all be co-developed. See this link under 'exploiting opportunities" http://www.businessweek.com/print/au...530_738189.htm

Businesweek Acquiring Volvo would give BMW a relatively healthy global brand that needs financial discipline, manufacturing efficiencies, and brand marketing know-how in order to make it more profitable. Volvo cars and SUVs are engineered to be front-wheel drive, while all BMW vehicles are rear-wheel drive. While it is unlikely that BMW would ever build a Volvo and BMW off the same engineering platform, there could be enormous savings from co-developing engines, electrical systems, telematics, and the like. BMW, too, would not hesitate to build Volvos outside of Scandinavia, a move Ford has not yet done to save on manufacturing costs.
