Another Steering Wheel Shimmy Question
I am currently running powdercoated OE 19" wheels and Yokohama ADVAN Sport tires, 245/35 fronts and 275/35 rears. My wheels and tires are road force balanced using Hunter 9700.
I noticed today that on the highway, between 70-80 mph, the steering wheel sometimes shimmies quite a bit, but at other times it is completely fine. And the quality of the road seems to be the same... What could be the problem? Or is it just the road? (I am hoping that it is the road, but I've never felt shimmy of such magnitude on the highway when I had other wheels and tires back in NY) Thanks! |

i am facing the same problem like you when my car running on highway between 110-120km/H, as i use 17mm spacer front and 20mm rear. I am not sure if it is the problem.

You drive car
Tyres are hot You park car on cold garage floor for few days Flat spot on tyre You drive car get shimmy (fix) You pump tyre to 50psi You drive fast, warm tyre up Drive slow, cool tyre, flat spot go away Confusses say:- Drive car more often or get hot water bottle for M3

Also some wheel balancer operators only balance wheels to a 10% or 5% tollerence, you need to make sure they dial the machine down to 0%!

It would be big problem to me, if it is really the problem of the spacers.....as my wheel require spacers.......maybe i should sell my wheel and order a wheels that no spacer required.....

ever since I purchased my ZHP it did that. I am hating it. I took it to the dealer, and the tech's answer: the wheels are bent. I don't buy that. I think it is something deeper. Anywho, I am thinking of getting some new shoes.

no, believe me I wish that is the case. Well, I do have to admit roads are not as fine as a baby's butt in Los Angeles. Nonetheless, it is getting on my nerve. My E36 M3-even though it is a different car different chassis-didn't behave like this on the road, with all the mods I have done to that car.

From everyone's complaints, I guess the E92 may be very sensitive to wheels, i.e. weight, offset, tolerance, and tires. So anything out of range may cause vibrations. Oh well, just have to try things out sometimes and hopefully it will work.

The steering wheel vibration seems to be common among M3s. I had my balance checked twice and alignment. Dealer told me it was most likely the tires. Got a new set of wheels and tires. Vibration remains. Starts getting very pronounced at 75 mph.

It does appear to be a sensitivity issue. I just rotated my winters and the 80-90 mph shimmy decreased significantly. I'm sure it will come back in a thousand miles or so.

I agree with wheels out of balance... BMW's stearing is sensitive enough to pick up the minor vibrations from a wheel being slightly out of balance. Blance your wheels by hand and you will see a difference... flats spots on garage queens tires are another story. You can make a hand balancing jig your self... Its quite easy... Motorcycle purists insist on hand balancing...

Revived this thread since that's exactly what I'm dealing with. Shimmy happened the first time I sped over 60-65 (on stock 19s), but not after that. Tires at 35 psi all around... BUT car wasn't used for 2 weeks, and just has 1,750 miles on the clock.
Could my stock tires be flat-spotting that easy? I thought maybe in winter, but not in a hot garage. Anyway, it wasn't that bad, but obviously noticeable. Am not going to bother taking the car in now, but just hope it doesn't get worse over time. What is it? It's obviously not a balance issue, as it'd happen all the time. Loose tie-rod ends? Loose rack-and-pinion gears? Or just a case of flat-spotting? I'd appreciate your comments. Thx. |

Wheels can get bent- On my old M3 I was surprised to find out that three of my OEM forged 19" wheels had bent out of round or cracked. Surprised because not one tire installer mentioned it (at 50K miles I was on my 4th set of tires), and only was brought to my attention when I refinished the wheels. Of course after polishing, and repair my slight off and on again vibration was completely gone replaced by that vibrationless new car feel.
So, if after getting a roadforce balance from a professional shop, you may want to have the wheels carefully checked for damage...

Hub centre rings
I had this issue and had several local tyre fitters balance the wheels to 0. Finally, one of the folks spotted that there was play between the non-standard wheel and the hub i.e. they put wheel on car with one wheel bolt finger tight and there was vertical play. Solution was simply to buy hub centre rings as the wheels were designed for the slightly larger E39 5 series hub. If I hadn't been able to do this and resolve I was definitely going back to stock as I hated the shimmy and it irritated me immensely ....
