M5 in the winter?

I'm thinking of getting a used 07-08 m5 for my second car/winter car. Canadain money is almost at par so there are some good deals in the states. I was wondering how a M5 will handle in the winter with snow tires.

Never had snow tires, but with the stocks its not even remotely drivable.

Actually many do drive their M3s in the winter. Just do a search on here and check it out.

Of course, 4 snow tires are mandatory to drive it.

Ya I know. I don't want to drive my M3 I want to get a M5 and drive that in the winter

I don't know about driving with snow tires, but with stocks it is undriveable. I drove an m5 (a friend's) for a few days, and it took me half an hour to get it out of a parking spot. Wheels spun in place when I tried to go forward or reverse.

If you're buying it out of love for //M cars, that's fine, but I would highly recommend against using it as a winter car. And I'm from Boston, I imagine the winters up in Canada are 10 times worse

Actually I don't get that much snow where I live. You get more for sure. I still would like to know if someone has one with winter tires. Our cars are undriveable without winter tires.

i would assume it would be just as good as the m3 in the winter, good rubber of course.

the lsd on the m3 makes it the best rwd winter car i have ever had, yes awd will be superior, but it is more than driveable.

Why buy an M5 for a winter car though? I mean, the M3 will do fine in the winter (as will any car with snow tires, as pointed out by the poster above me).

It's like saying, I need a car to haul wood, so I decided to buy a Porsche.

If you read my original post it said winter car/ 2nd car. I would like to have 2 cars. I don't really like suv's, I prefer sedans. A M5 for a 2nd car is far from getting a porsche to haul wood.

Yeah I saw that, I am saying that an M5 seems entirely arbitrary. I wouldn't want an SUV either, so I am with you there. "Winter car" means that you will not drive your other car in the winter - only this one right? But the M5 is no better a winter car than your M3. It won't handle the snow better. And the M5 is going to cost almost as much as an M3 so will not likely give you any less concern/guilt about getting salt all over it.

Now, if you are planning on driving both cars year round then yeah, my bad, ignore my post.

I don't see why an M5 couldn't be driven in winter. Sure, there are more capable cars for pure winter use but it's not like the M5 CAN'T be driven in the snow. I see plenty of RWD Sedans/coupes being driven around here. I usually catch 3-4 newer M5s rolling around winter and plenty of M3s.

i was dead set on a RS4 since early 07. just as i do the research it appears, they got MAJOR ISSUES, that cant be avoided!

now im back to second pick M3 doing my research, so far so good.

basicly AWD is great in snow! GREAT!!!!!! just a shame theres very few options on buying a good AWD car if you dont want a 4x4 suv

Do it! A women who lives around the corner from me drivers her M5 year round. See plenty of M5's in the GTA in winter.

Actually I would do exactly the opposite.

I would drive the M3 in the winter and buy a Lotus or Cayman for the warm months. There's no way I'd own two people hauling cars when I could have a true sports car to go with my four seater.

Also, FWIW, the Exige will get 10x more attention than an M5, if that is what you are after.
