Motor Stopped While Driving
Yesterday I was driving around and ended up finding a 5.0 Mustang to play with. Long story short I was growing threw 3rd gear and let off at around 7000rpms and the motor just stopped... Engine Malfunction came up with the half full engine sign along with every other warning light. As the rpms dropped the cold start meter thing followed the tack. The only noise I heard was a sort of mechanical chattering/resistance. The oil temp was higher than normal, probably at like 235-240, its 95 here in Texas.
So luckily I am able to turn the wheel enough without power steering and pull into a parking lot. At this point I am sure i spun a bearing lol. I let the car sit for sometime and then try and start up hoping for the best. She started up just like normal.. no knocking or any weird noises.. I rev the motor a bit a still nothing unusual.. no CEL either. What could have happened? I just went to get some food a few minutes ago and still nothing unusual. The car feels smooth as ever.. |

Use a bmw specific scan tool or a tuning cable (if you've tuned your car before) to read stored codes.
If you went into limp mode, you will at least have the limp mode code stored in your dme, even if the car drives fine now. |

Interesting ! And OP's situation sounds like a Lazarus effect ..
This I wouldn't trust => *The only noise I heard was a sort of mechanical chattering/resistance. The oil temp was higher than normal*

Could have had oil pressure loss and the DME shut things down. Could explain all of your symptoms. Could be low on oil and the oil condition/level sensor is faulty and not registering correctly. Report back with codes.

Happened to me when my car was almost brand new.
After quick search I was advised to check my battery cable connections. So I did, and my negative cable was loose. Tightened it up and never had the same problem again. There could be other reasons for this, but first thing I would check those battery cable connections.

DME won't turn the engine off due to lack of oil pressure. It's up the the driver once the oil pressure warning is displayed.
