buzzing resonance vibration sound.
Hey guys, as the paranoid freak I am, I noticed a new sound yesterday. the car was making a buzzing sound under normal acceleration at 2000 rpms. The noise isn't loud and normal volume music can drown it out but I noticed it. it sounds like a vibration resonance buzzing coming from the instrument cluster. The car was running cold when this happened at 55 degrees, the noise didn't happen as often when the engine warmed but it still happened here and there.
Any idea on what it is? or am I just crazy?

Just drove again to fill up gas....buzzing noise around 1.5-2.5K rpms, only in low gears, mostly 1,2 and sometimes 3.
This is driving me nuts....

It's a tack welded plate thats mounted to the exhaust system. I had that issue too. Just rip off the plate. It's tack welded in four spots, and one comes loose causing that vibration. It just has a bunch of numbers on it, and doesn't serve any function except for that horribly irritating noise.
I also get a sound that sounds like a bicycle chain going backwards when I'm cornering... Maybe someone can help me with that one? It's like click click click click etc in fast succession. My buddies brand new E90 M3 is doing the same thing...

I have the exact noise you are talking about. It always happens at 2000 rpm, and right around the instrument cluster. It seems to be there only when it is cool outside.

i drove around and listened for the sound while i was in the passenger seat. From what i heard, the sound is actually coming from the middle shifter area...After the car went to normal operating temp. it never came back. But before it never had it while the car was cold.
I am also very excited about this software update. But it makes me wonder why do we get it so late? If its out, every dealer should have it! Its just a update, not like theres hardware to be installed...

bringing this one back from the dead. but my car has this buzzing noise. i figured out it's coming from the plastic shelf under the hood. this is the plastic shelf/deck that the a/c microfilters sit on. although i know where it's coming from, i can't figure out how to stop it. everything is tight, but it's vibrating against the engine somehow. only happens when the engine is warm, and mostly at idle, and/or when engaging the clutch in 1st gear.

Actually a lot of the noises from inside the cabin come from the area around the air vents and is there when the parts are cold (often from running the air con through the vents). If you have warm air coming out of the vents (in particular the centre vents below the idrive or the rear passenger vents) the noises will disappear. The dealer fix for these noises is to disassemble and spray with some sort of (silicon?) lubricant.
