BMW learned from their mistake with the E46-hence the added strength around the rear subframe.
Bingo. Talk to anyone that cuts weight out of these to make track cars. What used to take one grinding disk to cut the welds now seems to take 4-5. Stronger metals, more material.

That and the usual comfort, electronics, and the size of the vehicle.
