Iphone/Google Maps works through Bluetooth
So I might be late to the party but just found something that impressed me.
I do not have Idrive/Navi in my current M3 and when needing directions I use my Iphone 5. As we all know the new OS has apple's maps on it which is terrible and can only hear the directions off the phone's speakers. So I went and installed Google Maps onto my phone. Well while using Google Maps, the Bluetooth picks it up and the directions are then voiced out of the car's speakers! Ah the little things that excites me these days.

Not to try and start a war here but people who say apple maps is horrible are over exaggerating. I actually think the apple maps are better than the google maps currently. Main reason being that since the apple maps is native the voice navigation still works even when you leave the map app. Google can't do that which takes alot of convenience out but then again bt through the car works too

I noticed that too, very nice. As for the comment about lack of voice when multitasking, I don't feel the need to check email/text when I'm driving. I've also had Apple maps steer me in the wrong direction a few times, so glad to have the Google app. I did like the Apple interface and graphics a bit better.

I actually really like apples map. It is pretty precise and has good visual quality. I understand that there are some issues with it but it has been good for me so far

Navigon for the iPhone or Android. Then you won't have problems, you'll get voice instructions all the time (foreground or background, if you want, or not), and you won't pull from your data plan.
If only we could hook the iPhone video-out to the iDrive display and it would be perfection.

And what do you mean you can't leave the Google maps's app when voice guidance is on... I used it to take me to a new Track that I haven't been to before and was switching between GoogleMaps, EscortLive and Facebook...? So i don't know what you're talking about.. Not to be rude, but now you know. Quote:

Navigon is $59.99 in the AppStore, Who would pay for that when we do have AppleMaps and GoogleMaps heck, even MapQuest for iOS does VoiveNav. And to get techy but Navigon is heavy and slow app. I know from experience. I can't justify the $59.99 to use any sort of MAPS while off trail or where I wouldn't have data.. And who cares about pulling data from your plan? Don't you have Unlimited Data? You CAN... you just need to

apple maps sucks. end of story. there are many POI's missing and I just end up going on google finding the location and figuring out the directions/info myself I gave apple a chance but as soon as google maps became available in the apps store, i never hesitated to download it. If apple maps > google, then why is it a top app downloaded? |

Considering that Garmin/Navigon has sold thousands of versions, I think there's a heck of a lot of people that like it. For starters, Navigon does not require a data plan and does not require streaming of live data (it can be done if a person wants traffic updates, local weather, and other info.) I don't even use the voice part, so that's not a factor anyhow with Apple or Google. I don't find Navigon heavy or slow on an iPhone 4s or iPhone 5, and feel it is superior to Apple and Google maps in almost every manner. Thanks for the search tip. I should clarify: I don't want video from an iPhone to iDrive; I want the exact view of Navigon to be displayed on the iDrive control screen. I've seen and researched a few "hacks" but I don't want to do that. - V

My next phone is going to be a Windows Phone. Everyone I know who has WP8 is very happy with it. It will be interesting to use the Naviteq/Nokia Maps.

This used to be a great feature, but I've noticed it is extremely spotty with the recent ios7 upgrade. Sometimes the voice comes through, sometimes it doesn't

Navigon and other off-line maps will continue to work even if you have no reception. So if you do use navigation a lot and travel outside of populated areas, it's well worth the cost. Last thing you need is to be stranded in the middle of nowhere because your phone has no reception and you can't get directions.
